You are correct sir. I misspoke. I bought cotton flannel (moleskin, I think), for flanging cloth & cotton duck (canvas) for my flanging bag.

I'm thinking of traditional style felt sombreros. Jean Tardan is the fellow I had in mind. I'll look for photos. Here is one: http://www.icollector.com/Purple-1900s-Mexican-Sombrero_i8774196 I want a basic one though...

It is basically a cotton flannel, in white or off white. If you have trouble finding it, look at the historical re-enactment web stores. It was apparently used for britches in revolutionary or civil war times, and you can pick it up at such sites.

Dogman, you can get cotton duck cloth at any fabric store at a decent price. You don't have to buy it from that eBay seller at hundreds. It's also a light canvas but is furry on one side so you don't transfer any of the weave to the hat. I agree with Hatter4, you've got it nice & tight, which...

An Intro to Hat Terminology: A Fedora Lounge Guide

Lumpy, to me, describes a felt that is out of shape. Warbles in the brim or waves/lumps in the crown. These are remedied with re blocking, re flanging, and/or ironing. They usually can be worked out by hand, but the results are not as satisfactory, IMHO.

Joao, I have seen one genuine old basic felt sombrero, and some high end decorated felt sombreros, (by the Frenchman whose name escapes me at present - real works of art) but most I've seen are modern era decorative hats & are made of cloth velour. The genuine ones I've seen were very small...

Ask a question, get an answer

Question: Did anyone actually see LuvMyMan post a link to a live auction? Does a gentlemen speak rudely to a lady in public? Is it ruder to make an error in etiquette or to publicly point out someone else's inadvertent rudeness? Does a gentleman stand idly by and watch a lady publicly...

I wonder if anyone has a catalogue showing the offering. I'll review the Stetson stuff thread, maybe.

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I calculated the size at 7 3/8 if the given measurements were right. I bid in the last 10 secs left and was in the lead for a few secs until someone (Alan?) doubled my bid in the last couple. Still a good price for such a hat. I'm no expert, but I think 1920's seemed a reasonable estimate...

Thanks Mr. Astor! The photos were actually auction photos, but I hadn't thought about the pinholes when purchasing. I usually put a rubber band around my own ribbon spools. Thanks also for the tip Brad, and very cool ribbon Hatter4. I'm wondering if it was offered for sale by Stetson, or was...

Thanks gents. I will wash & dry the canvas before I make the new bag regardless, to tighten up the weave. I sewed down the side creases in the old bag & took out all the wrinkles in the bottom. The problem, as Olė notes, was the distribution of sand. It's working well now, I just want to make...

I think you're talking about the earlier post regarding a giant pin on the front of the hat? If so, I agree. I have been tempted though, to buy an old 1800's military pin & put it on the right style of cowboy hat...
