Ask and it shall be given. Thank you! I have not seen Der Hutmacher, where can I find it?

This may or may not be a sad iron used by hatters (it has a rounded bottom - pun purely coincidental, really ;-), but I could not resist posting the Butt polishing iron:

Here's a Knox ruler I just found, not mine. It has the same size chart as some of the others I've posted.

Thank you! I'm glad to be able to credit the photo. Great additions! Any 1900's work benches like Oliver was looking for, or others like this? I've also been looking for a hatter's bow photo for a long time, but have found only diagrams...

Thought it was the same item. Here's the only old photo I've found of a hatter's bench, and I can't for the life of me remember where I found it. Probably the American Hatter based in the placement in my photo stream. Actually looks more like a block making shop.

What do you fellows use for sweatband stickers? I used to use 3M paper packing tape because it was very durable & very sticky, but it is not nearly as good as it used to be. Although still very sticky, it is now plasticized, and seems to pull up much more on my packages for some reason. I...

And I found the one I'd seen, which appears to be the same as yours. I posted it some time back, taken from a web site:

Very cool. I can't make out all of the measurements, and like my stretcher, there does not seem to be direct identity between sizes & measurements, but very cool!

Here's a similar design by Reslaw Hats of London (by way of Luton), owned by Paul Walser & Co. Ltd. (get it?) in business from 1906 to 1960's. According to the author of the book Hatatorium, the company originally focused on straws (thus the factory in Luton) but eventually was a major supplier...

Well, I guess the 1/2 inch increments don't directly match up, but rather, fall between the sizes. This stretcher - including the size plate itself - is very much like my stretcher. Enough so that I am now sure mine is also a Garvé. Here is the size plate from my stretcher: Incidentally, my...

Here's a photo I nabbed from a Garve hat stretcher, with 1/2" increments in circumference for each 1/8 inch in size.

I find it unlikely that anyone will want to give away their favorite sites, but you can find references here from time to time. Your best bet is to soak up knowledge & apply it to your internet searches.

    College ring

I suggest contacting one or more of the companies that makes class rings now. If they did not make it, they certainly must have databases of information regarding high schools, universities, etc., and the corresponding symbology going back many years. "Faint hat never won fair lady"

    Plastic Hat Shapers really work!

I agree with TheDane. I love uninformed sellers. Crossing threads with TJ's conversion corral posts, I recently bought an antique rounding jack for $4.99 in a BIN from a seller who seemed to have known what it was, but not what it was worth. I understand your point about time spent - there's...

    Plastic Hat Shapers really work!

Ok, to re-block with the sweatband in, you would want a block that matches your head size (and shape, if possible). To re-block after removing the sweat, you want a block that is marked the size you want to block the hat at, which will already have about 7/8 to 1" extra circumference added to...
