    Plastic Hat Shapers really work!

You are welcome. Donne is a favorite of mine.

    Western, anyone?

If you like it, I can send you the remaining section. It was a length of belt I bought online for this project, and split. Probably enough left for one more hat.

    Western, anyone?

Thanks! Not the sweat - it was rotten. I clipped the ID stuff and glued it under the new sweat though, to preserve the history. The liner, yes, but it's a standard "Resistol Western" liner - nothing fancy.

    Roxford hats

Bump, with an update on quality paper tape for fixing hat boxes & taping sweatbands. Zoiks & Zounds if I didn't stumble across the good stuff at U-Haul!

    parbuntal straw hats

Olė, I've got a beautiful rusty ribbon, but it is the lack of any Panama blocks, C-crown or otherwise, that has me stalled. I bought a vintage dark blue woman's parabuntal in an appropriate brim width some time back, stripped it down to the body, washed it and rolled it up for later use. It, a...

    Western, anyone?

Here's a project hat for you fellows, a great Resistol (model name withheld for purely selfish reasons) 3" wide brim that I reblocked, resized, flanged, and completely renovated for my nephew. The brim has not yet been shaped - I'll do that to order when he picks it up. The felt on this...

    Plastic Hat Shapers really work!

Indeed, felt is a very tough material. Like other hair, it can last almost indefinitely if it doesn't become moth fodder. I am reminded of John Donne's line in The Relic about "a bracelet of bright hair about the bone." http://www.usask.ca/english/prufrock/donne2.htm

    resizing vintage

I like the felt on Stagecoaches and like Stagecoaches generally (to wear or convert on request), but personally prefer a couple of other generally lesser known Resistol models that I will not name here for quality of felt. Joao, your dark brown Stagecoach (on which I just finished putting a new...

Here's a better pic of the product's claims, and my reason for purchase:

HS, I've been using Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane on the flanges I've cleaned up with good results so far. It comes in both spray (a very nice quality rattle can sprayer) and a can. Here's the can, same label for the spray.

    The Conversion Corral

My day job & back problems had gotten me behind, but tonight the Midnight Hatter rides again! Joao, I cleared my inbox & sent you a PM. If you missed it, the new bow on your Stagecoach is done, see below. I brushed the hat but did not reshape the brim or crown. Please see my PM & get back...

    Solving the butter dish debate....

I have a butter bell. It would work well in many areas, but it is hot here, and the bell-shaped design lets the softened butter fall into the water. Hand thrown french butter dishes often have an inverted bell shape, which might prevent this. I may purchase one, but for now I'm putting ice...

    Post New Hats Here!

This one isn't bad felt, especially compared to modern hats. It's lightweight, which is nice, and I really like the concentric rings and the tip design. It's quite clear they were intended as a sport hat - probably meant to be crushable...

    Post New Hats Here!

First hat I've posted here in a while, a thrift store 1940's "Flip-It" sports hat. It's very lightweight and has a great tip design. I wish I had some "drink me" now Alan. It's a size 7 - just a little too small. I think it's made by Alexander based on this 1947 ad I found...

I can't recall, but the thicker the better. Also, as noted, it was canton cloth for the flanging. As for the cotton duck for the sandbag, I think I bought the heaviest they had at the local JoAnne's fabric store. The one I chose seemed slightly plasticized or urethaned on the back, which I...

Can anyone recommend a hot foil stamping machine for sweatbands? I'm thinking Kingsley /Franklin, probably, for both cost & authenticity reasons.
