Well you figure my great grandpa was born in the 1880s so perhaps for him, from where he originally came from/his upbringing that was the style he was accustomed to.
I don't know if any of you can tell, but what type of hat do you think my great grandfather (on the right) is holding? I thought perhaps a straw a hat, but the picture was taken April 22nd 1945, so not straw hat time or weather more than likely.
Kennedy meeting with President Sukarno, April 1961. Apparently he wasn't pressured into wearing this fedora and just wore it casually, easily. Note fedora in hand. I've read other photos exist from the meeting with it on his head.
Also, Kennedy meeting with Khrushchev, hat held in hand...
My Italian Great Grandfather (1883-1956) wore straw or panama sort of hats. He was an immigrant and successful businessman who was involved in the ''junk'' business and owned numerous properties. He was not a military man.
My Irish Great Grandfather (1888-1964) wore fedoras, newsboy caps in the...
From looking at pix, at least in the late 40s, 50s (and especially in the early 60s), it seems that hats (at least fedoras) were worn by ''upper middle class'' men, or businessmen, or those who wanted to appear wealthy or upperclass. I don't mean to use a derogatory term but it seems they were...
I found one of him from December 2nd, 1960, on the way to Georgetown hospital to see Jackie and Jack, Jr (or so the caption says):
Plus this from Opening day, March or April 1961:
And these with Ike, April 1961:
Personally I look at the Golden Era as 1920-1963. The only thing I really like post 1963 is the music and the late 70s-90s big blockbuster movies and period movies. Not the cultural attitudes or culture or society so much since.
Though I do have to admit my favorite era of cars is like...
Bump...
I just figured rather than making a new thread, I'd re post in this one...
Though my date range has changed--I think the date would extend from 1955-1963 as sort of a Second Golden Era, or maybe 1955-1964.
Question---
As you can tell by this photo (which was taken in 1949), my grandfather's hair was pretty long for the time and wavy. However it looks almost as if it was ironed down--I am wondering what you think he may have used to keep it flat down yet still retain his natural waves:
Pencil Thin Mustaches
I know we had a thread on famous pencil thin mustache wearers, but what I'm wondering is--
When did the trend start, by who and when did it wane/decline?
My grandpa on my mother's side was a cousin somehow to Al Capone; His father supposedly worked as a "Junk Dealer" and was an immigrant who owned numerous properties here by the time he died; His brother was a Mafioso of some sort and his brother's children ran with the Gallo brothers. My great...
And also to consider, which might help getting the dimensions of the hat even better considered is that the man standing next to him, my grandfather, was 5'11 or 5'11 and 1/2 inches tall, so it might help you with determing the size of the hat given his height as a measure of the dimensions...
I'm not sure, but they're taken relatively the same period (mid-late 40s). I never met my great uncle since he died in 1979 so I don't know how often he cycled through hats but they could well be the same.
I'm not really a fan of stingy brim fedoras, and I'd love to get a wide brimmed like my great uncle's. This picture was taken in 1945 and his seems to have a wide brim and great bash--I was wondering where I could get one with a similar, wide brim, tall crown and thick bash along with the thick...
Photos of JFK in a fedora?
I know there are some about, and I ask since JFK was the last president to wear a fedora while in office (LBJ wore Stetson Cowboy Hats and Nixon wore fedoras prior to becoming president). Could anyone post any pix of JFK wearing a fedora?

Hey, are there any actual 30s songs that feature lively tap dancing over a big band sort of sound like in this song from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (which was set in 1935)?
