I'm not really a fan of stingy brim fedoras, and I'd love to get a wide brimmed like my great uncle's. This picture was taken in 1945 and his seems to have a wide brim and great bash--I was wondering where I could get one with a similar, wide brim, tall crown and thick bash along with the thick band. Basically a carbon copy if possible. I believe I'm a size 6 7/8 or a size 7. How many inches would one estimate the brim to be, what is his bash style called and how high would you say the brim would need to be to approximate the same dimensions on a size 7 hat? Also how could I get the brim nice and cocked the way his is?

Also, given the style of the hat and the period--April 1945 to be exact--what brand do you think his hat was?

I have no idea what kind of hat that is, but I'm sure that Mr. Art Fawcett could make you one just like it in the color of your choice. I believe he has used old photos to copy hat styles for others before. Check out the Art Fawcett hall of fame thread for examples.

i agree with bluesman on this one. however, if you do not want to spend the cash, you coudl try christy's adventurer model, and have either a hatter ( i used ascot top hats) or hornets do the modifications.

christys offers a dark charcoal grey and they told me that they offer a 2 inch black ribbon, so you could try them too.
but the crown will have very slight taper, whereas your great uncles hat appears to be stove-pipe straight.

let us know what you decide.- it is a nice looking hat.

i would guess you are looking at a 5.5 inch high crown and a 2 and 5/8s wide brim

I would talk to Art Fawcett http://www.vintagesilhouettes.com/ . Looks like at least a 2 1/2" brim with a center dent crown with a loose front pinch and a bound or welted brim. Check out the Brooklyn. Keep in mind Art can do whatever you want in whatever colour. From the top it looks very Indiana Jones so maybe have a look at Penman hats http://www.penmanhats.com/ . If you don't want to go for a custom job maybe check out the Akubra Squatter. http://www.hatsdirect.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?view=29&returncat=Akubra+Hats&returnpage=1

A 5 1/2 to 6 inch crown, and 2 5/8 brim? The brim doesn't look quite 2 3/4 to me, although it could be.

With the type of top crease it has and based off the idea that the ribbon is 1 1/2 inches. I would say its 5 1/2 open crown with a 2 1/2 inch brim.

Based the ribbon off of some of the other items in the photo.

Is both photos of the same hat?

I'm not sure, but they're taken relatively the same period (mid-late 40s). I never met my great uncle since he died in 1979 so I don't know how often he cycled through hats but they could well be the same.

And also to consider, which might help getting the dimensions of the hat even better considered is that the man standing next to him, my grandfather, was 5'11 or 5'11 and 1/2 inches tall, so it might help you with determing the size of the hat given his height as a measure of the dimensions involved in the people and items of the photo
