    Button-Down Collars with Suits

Confirms what I thought... ...might be true. Brooks Brothers also claims Seersucker and who knows what else. True? False? Who knows. Now motor cycles, and open cars -- maybe we've got something there.

    Vintage Clothes, Modern Jobs?

I wear reproduction... ...but in a classic style. Most of the people where I work wear either flight suits or BDUs (military) or khakis/polos (civilian). I am in coat and tie every day and always wear a fedora. I often sport a silk pocket square. It's easier to dress classically as a man...

strangest, weirdist or just plain wrong toy from your youth

Guns, guns... ...and more guns. Had 'em all. In particular I had a plastic M-14 rifle that shot little bullets powered by a spring in the cartridge case. I still remember trying to chamber a live 30-06 round in it. Luck was with me and it didn't fit. Phew!

    September 9th Parade...

...has an "In Step With" interview with Terrence Howard. Note the suit. I've seen that a number of high profile "with it" types have adopted suits sans ties. I also see a number of homburgs and fedoras, usually with the brim up.

    Do you own a Tux?

So true... ...I remember reading that Thomas Jefferson continued to wear knee breeches until he died, despite the fact that they out of style for over 20 years. Those outfits became elevated from everyday to "court dress." Interestingly, it seems that the everyday outfit of today becomes...

    Button-Down Collars with Suits

Well... ...I think button downs were the original polo shirts. Supposedly buttoning down the collars kept them from flapping. Over time they became paired with sports coats and eventually, men began to wear them with suits. Technically a suit was once to be worn with a dress shirt, which...

    Do you own a Tux?

I too have a Jos A Bank... ...Tuxedo. I bought it at least 15-20 years ago. I've stayed the same size, so I can still wear it. I currently have it on about once per year. Presuming you buy a good tux, take care of of it, and don't change sizes, you will get your money back many times over.

    Man Made or Leather Soles?

Understand... ...we're not talking insoles, but nylon soles that go on the bottom of the shoe. I'm telling you, these things make your shoes last forever. It also helps a lot in the rain. The water doesn't soak into the sole.

The Dumbest Comment I Ever Heard

Oh, where do... ...I start? I bought my first fedora over 30 years ago and have heard it all. I've heard every gangster/movie/TV/book reference mentioned here. I hear some strange things, usually very early in the morning at WalMart where I sometimes stop at 6:00 am on the way to work...

    Gentlemen's Clubs

In the days before... ...TV, movies, radio, phones etc. those clubs were a way to meet, greet, and pass time. Rich men had clubs, poor men had pubs. In the days before reliable restaurants they also provided a good place to get a meal. As more activities were invented to pass time, the...

What is the Single Most Useful Thing This Place Has Given You?

Buncha' Stuff... ...The oft stated "I'm not the only one doing this." A renewed sense that there a lots of great people out there. Also, Matt's post on how to bash a fedora. I have a grey Borsalino that has a very high, narrow crown. It really gave me the Beldar Conehead look. I reworked...

    Comfort and dress shoes

Matt, good dissertation... ...on the merits of various shoes. "Dress shoes" were not originally thought of as such. They were just shoes. In the 30s with a more limited choice of materials, shoes were leather with some cork and sometimes rubber heels. What we call a dress shoe is actually...

    Man Made or Leather Soles?

I too use sole savers on my shoes... ...and have for years. I've now reached the point where all my shoes have never been worn without them. They only add a little thickness to the sole, but make the shoes last forever. When you resole shoes you pull them in a bit, and to me the shoes...

    shirt garters?

Wow... ...I haven't thought about shirt stays for years. I wore them in the Air Force, but never since. My solution is simple: Drink a lot of coffee Take a lot of leaks Tuck your shirt while you are in the men's room Works.

    Valentino - I just don't get it...

Dead on Dix... It's hard for us to understand. When King Kong was first screened, they had a spider scene that they cut because it make people retch, pass out, etc. To us now the whole movie looks corny and fake. In a world of no cosmetic anything think of how much better Valentino looked...
