Okay Teach, I've read all the advice and I would add one thing. To clarify, the oval, long oval thing has to do with how a hat FITS and not necessarily how it LOOKS. When you go try on hats at the local brick and mortar hat store you'll start to see what fits around your head best.

I think you'll be surprised at what starts to look better to you. The wide brims and really tall crowns look a bit different if you're used to looking at baseball caps, but seeing them in pictures here everyday they start to look normal! You'll be ready to step out of your comfort level to try...
It's possible to pull off any combination of hat and attire, but I think your wife is pretty dead on about jammin' with the porkpie! Stay on the Lounge and peruse the threads and you'll see some looks you'd like to emulate and others you think don't necessarily work as well. Again, welcome, Teach!
Teach, you wear those hats pretty well! You are off to a good start, and it's not uncommon to feel a little self conscious wearing a brimmed hat out and about the first few times. Keep it up and you'll develop "hatitude."
