I'd be interested in purple liners for my works of Art. I guess we should to find out if there are enough people interested to make it worthwhile for Art to order some?
BTW - Great hat. I agree that it's a wonderful color combination that would not have occured to me...
Recently we have been working our way through the left over half bottles of Tokaji wines and some Vin Santo from a party. Last night however, as a special indulgence, we finished off the '85 Taylor Fladgate.
Thats a tough question if your keep stirctly to the decades. I like much about the Edwardian period but some of my favorite styles, music, art and architecture come from the period between the wars in New York City.
My favourite inks have always been the blue-black inks. I also tend to pick up Montblanc or Omas blue-black inks when I take my pens in for cleaning or maintenance. Noodlers is my preferred ink but I won't pass on free or discounted inks from the manufacturer...
I've always thought it a shame that we don't have a better source for the meanings of the tags from these now defunct hat makers. We have the model and block that was used to shape the hat - it would be great to use that to identify dates, etc.
For the Cavanagh vs. overwelt - I tried bending...
Brad,
Thank you for the great information. I have tried to take some close-ups of the edge and the remaining tag under the sweat band. It looks like the edge is still stiched (?) but it was hard to clear away the long hair to get a clear shot.
Thanks also for the note on spelling - I...
BK - Thank you. Hare would make sense as well. The hairs are finer than beaver and very soft. I now own several long hair or "fuzzy" hats including a few vintage borsalinos from various periods.
What I really like about them is the extra texture and depth of color. Just like my walls - I...
It's still an intersting experience to know that these were exaclty the same cigars someone would have smoked at the gaming tables and lounges in 1950's Havana. And, it's proving to be a huge draw for our event.
Warbird - Yes. We purchased two boxes + (one full box, and two partially filled boxes) of pre-embargo Cubans, both from the 1950's that would have been found in the clubs and casinos of Havana. While they drew well and had a pleasant but relatively mild flavor I'm not certain I would plunk...
KObalto - Thanks. When I had it in my hands I was quite surprised by the obvious quality and good condition. I was surprised to see only a handfull of bids for the hat so it was pretty cheap as well... I've searched the internet and the FL to find out more about Cavanagh, their hats and their...
:offtopic: ???
A bit of an aside - I have not been active on the board for a while and I am sad to see quite a bit more dissention than I had seen in my time on the board.
For me, one of the great attractions of these fora was the courtesy of the other posters and the civil discourse...
Partagas No. 50 Especial - a tasting of some pre-embargo Cuban cigars.
For a special prize at our upcoming "Evening in Havana" celebration - a party with gaming tables, drinks and food from Havana's heyday in the 1950s - we have purchased two boxes of pre-embargo cigars as prizes along with a...
Perhaps it would be possible to indent or indicate to whom a poster is responding in a consolidated thread? I understand the desire / need to organize and manage redundant threads. I just hope that inquiries in these posting don't get lost in the many conversations they generate. I am always...
After reading through the entire thread I have to say that Miss 1929 has a point. The Fedora Lounge has grown over time as has the breadth of interests shared by our diverse community. I do hope the FL remains first and formost a place to learn and to share our interests and that we can keep...
Let's try to remember Bill Buckley as a writer and a man. He and Brendan Gill were two of my childhood heros. They showed me great kindness when I was growing up during some particularly difficult times. I thoroughly enjoyed his spy novels and our occasional conversations. He was a true...
The seller thought it might be mink or seal. It is incredibly soft so mink would not surprise me. I have two beaver fur hats one sheared and one not along with one sealskin hat and all three are quite coarse and more substantial than this Cavanaugh.
I have not read through this entire thread yet but wanted to give my first impression. When I first found the Fedora Lounge it was to search for information about fedoras and panamas - both modern and vintage. When I first started posting it seemed to be a collection fora dedicated primarily...
