Not just starched, I've seen those same straps on soft silk Arrow collars from the '20s. They're particularly useful on high collars for keeping the tie in the right place.
I drafted the vest from the 1949 Modern Tailor, Outfitter, and Clothier last night. I'll make a mockup to test it in the next couple of days. I'm not sure if I got the points or the front and bottom edges quite right, but that's what the mockup is for. I hope it's right, the vest pattern I've...
It's actually pretty quiet, can't hear it outside the dining room. A very nice, deep bell though. A friend of mine repairs clocks but he's got a backlog before he can get to this one.
Picked up this New Haven mantle clock at a garage sale a couple weeks ago. I managed to talk the guy down to $10 because it only ran a few seconds (he said it never ran since he got it), and I was the only person all day to even look at it. Got it home, and on a level surface. It does need a...
It was an unlined 2 button, notch lapel in a mid gray. Probably late '50s. Nothing fancy, but summer wear has always been a bit sparse in my wardrobe so I was happy to find it. I had to sell it a little over a year ago, it just didn't fit anymore.
I have only ever had one pair of trousers go foul in any way, worn through in the crotch. They were not vintage, a rather loose-woven blend, not sturdy. Never had any trouble with any vintage, 70-80 years old. Unless your trousers are very tight, you probably have nothing to worry about at all.
I need to get a new stroller outfit, and when I'm in a position that requires attendance at commencement I'll wear it with my gown. Should look good under the Leeds PhD robes. Even without the stroller I'll stand out amongst most of the other American academics.
Individual fit just doesn't work with mass production. Even if two people were the same height and weight, custom suits will have subtle differences even with the same features. Modern clothes are cut-and-shut, one size fits as many as possible. Overhead drops, profits rise, style dies...
Here's several ties that show some different treatments. The wide end will usually be constructed similarly. You can see how the seams ends several inches from the point and the general asymmetry: http://vintagehaberdashers.com/tag/1930s-1940s-1950s/
One dead giveaway is the unlined, asymmetrical hem, more usual of older ties. Lined ties generally retained the asymmetry, and the seam does not go all the way to where the sides cross.
The construction of the ends is different than modern ties. Length can be an indicator, but not a 100% reliable one. I have a couple '40s ties that are quite long. When I look through the tie racks in thrift stores, I sift through looking at the ends.
I've split an awful lot of wood, and I've taught a lot of people how to split wood over the years. Everyone has their own method (and opinion). I would say, that it's only hard if you're doing it wrong, and there are a lot of variables. I have several tools (various axes, mauls, hammers, and...

Sometimes it's a facing, to cover the buttonholes on the inside, but that's more common on vests and overcoats. I have one suit jacket that seems to have that as an original feature.
Some women's wear up on eBay right now.

I have a pair of size 10 spats by Bond Street and they are a little too small for my size 9 shoes. But I also have a pair of size 9s that are a perfect fit from another maker. I don't think there was any standardization of sizes form them, or if there was I've never been able to figure it out...
I have three eBay auctions ending today:
