    Fabulous Movie Costume Auction

Isn't it sad? She so wanted to start a Movie Museum. I was so surprised she couldn't pull it off. It would be such an obvious choice for Hollywood, and an obvious tourist draw. She's had the stuff in storage for decades. Stuff that would have been thrown out or just disappear in the props and...

1861 - The Consequences of the Crinoline

I was aware of the fire danger and the discomfort and awkwardness of sitting, but never thought of the small children pushed off footbridges and pushed under carriage wheels by the hoops. From what I've read, the main worry of women wearing hoops was the one about tripping and falling...

What A Girl Scout Knew In 1923

Hey LD, I also went from Brownies to senior girl scout. All those accomplishments Lizzy listed would probably have been merit badges that you worked on over months or years. GS where I grew up was a joke, a pale girly imitation of Boy Scouts. All you needed to get a badge was to have a parent...

    Detroit in ruins

I was looking for my husband's ancestors' homes in Detroit on Zillow.com. Amazing. Gorgeous old houses-Victorian to mid '50s in bad nieghborhoods or sometimes the only house in a neighborhood, going for $2000-$5000 each. One house was worth more in 1920 than it's worth now. In a good...

Anyone have room for 1 more?

I too am in Southern California. I know the Holidays can be really rough when you're in mourning. Maybe you could plan some liitle trips or even just a picnic or seeing an exhibit at a museum, something positive and fun to look forward to every month. Maybe a family snow trip for next Christmas...

    Show us your vintage patterns!

I love love love this Mc Calls but did you all notice the sides of the striped skirt. I don't think I've ever seen stripes done that way. I bet if I sewed it that way, people would be telling me I screwed up. Or thinking it! Of course Lauren's sewing is so professional looking I guess no one...

Tipping the mail carrier: a thing of the past?

As an ex mail-lady, I can tell you the Post Office sort of has a "don't ask - don't tell" policy as far as cash and gifts go. Letter carriers gladly accept money or gift cards...usually $5-20. The most I got was $50 from one customer. Some carriers who really get to know everyone on their routes...
