Thanks guys, for putting me right about the crotch piece. Rabbit, those light grey trousers in the picture are more or less exactly how my tailor does them, except that he makes the waist a bit higher, so that the top of the waistband just touches the first rib. Looks like he is on the right...
Gentlemen, I watch this thread, with a sense of fascination. Most interested in the way that Rabbit managed to communicate his wishes to a tailor thousands of miles away. I have noticed with my recent suits that while the rise is sufficient in front, it is a little too short in the back (about...
Fastuni, I stand corrected, or at least guided. The old "continental", "English" and "American" division might work, and possibly sub-groups between western Europe, dominated at least before WW2 by France, and Middle Europe, dominated possibly up to WW1 by Austria and after that from Germany...
Sorry, two-button, with the top one fastened. Breast pocket is a patch pocket, and the pocket square looks like a carnation. Is that a spear point collar with a bar? Good width in the thighs and knees of the pants. I get all mine made like that. I tell the tailor that I don't want to feel any...
And another one with George Raft in what looks like a tweed suit. A genuine clothes horse, Raft's suits seem to have upstaged his acting ability. The camera angle distorts the proportions, but it seems a classic three-button from the 30s.
Back on track with this thread, two interesting poses here: William Powell, always dapper, and a curious shot of George Raft.
Raft's jacket is open, unusually, and the trouser rise is lower than usual, so the picture was probably taken in the 40s. Note the lapels.
You are right. I recall Munich in the 80s still had some very German clothes in the shops, and a few men wearing leather raincoats, which you never saw in Canada, where I come from. In London in the 70s I recall seeing people in bowler hats and stiff collars in the city and in offices, but not...
I am intrigued by all these old photographs. It is possibly worth noting that up until WW2 it was feasible to identify a man's nationality, ,more or less, by the appearance of his clothes. In films and books of the period one comes across detectives guessing whether a man was from Britain or the...
Eddie, like you all my suits, about 12, are made in a vintage style, a kind of blend of 40s and 50s. My old tailor made them using a sort of 80s does 40s cut, which I didn't mind. I keep some of my clothes at my office. I am self employed, so nobody objects. Compared to your 200 ties, I have...
Seeing all these vests got me thinking about asking the tailor to do one for my next suit. Given that my suits are all based on vintage styles and pants just over the bottom rib what is the correct height for the bottom vest button assuming six buttons and how far apart should the buttons be?
Congratulations. They look great. Did you get the fabric there, or have it imported? I know about the weight gain. It happens to us all when we live in hot, humid countries. Was it difficult to make the tailor understand what you wanted?
