This thread is quite extraordinary. From Indian Jones's hat to falsies to typewriters. Where else on the Internet can one find such a compendium? On a serious note, bare lady pictures and films on the Internet will do lasting psychological damage to a generation of boys and will affect their...
Vampyre Master, do you think cashmere for a suit is quite right? In my admittedly limited experience, cashmere does not crease well, and lacks strength, though it feels great and has body. Also, would demob suits have been made of cashmere? What do you think?
What the people above write is spot on: the parts have to work together -- collar lying where it should, sleeves accommodating the arm movement, jacket staying where it ought to be, even when you contort the posture. Very challenging, because the jacket is made of cloth, canvassed and stitched...
Thanks Guttersnipe. It almost looks like the way in which a lady's jacket would be shaped. You can see the darts in the pictures. It must be a challenge working with stripes or patterns and getting them to match.
Hi Ici419,
I have seen the Etsy site Mapledoram. They claim that the suits are exact copies of demob suits. If this is correct, then the suits will probably be cut right. However, they do not specify what the material is. If it is light weight cloth, the suits will have the wrong feel to them...
Not sure about iTailor, as haven't used them. Personally, I would always recommend a face-to-face tailor, if possible. It looks like black piping around the lapels and pockets of that suit in the picture (the lower one). If you want the early 30s look, I have to say I don't think it really fills...
Patrick, I just spotted the suit. Amazing all round. Great wide herringbone (?) pattern, great colour and above all, phenomenal waist suppression. I had a jacket constructed like that many years ago, and was astounded then at the sculpting effect in the shape. I would hazard that it is one of...
Fantastic picture. The check jacket on the left looks quite short, and reminds me more of the 20s. Or am I mistaken? The grey one on the right and the black in the middle look more like typical 30s. Trousers on the black one seem very wide for the period, particularly below the knees.
Thanks. It's a life long study, isn't it? As you say, sturdy cloth will do the trick. And possibly the way that the lining is done. I have noticed in vintage suits that the lining seems to be much tighter against the outer shell than in modern suits.
Question for the experts on FL: Am I right in supposing that suits in the 1940s did not have flaps on the jacket pockets? From what I have seen in the pictures on this thread, some did, and some didn't. Could someone advise, as will be commissioning some suits in the near future, and am...
Gents, do you know how much fabric is required for ladies' suits? About 5'2" tall and US size 10? Searched all over the internet, but can't find an answer. Please excuse if there is another area of FL dedicated to this particular subject.
Eddie, that jacket looks exactly like one that I have on a suit from my father, probably made around 1948. What did you tell the tailor in order to get it like that? Also, did you tell him to bulk up the canvas in the chest? That style, with the three button knotch lapels, is what I want for...
