The Story (more or less); St. Ignatz was with me a few months back when I...
Nothing against Stetson, but their non-cowboys can be a bit hit-or-miss in terms of durability against the elements, regardless of the felt grade. If it's going to be used the way you describe, I think it would be safer (and probably cheaper) to pick up an Akubra. The prices are great, even...
It may sound like an odd request to some, but I want to get an idea of what an A-2 bomber jacket would look like on a heavier guy like myself. Open and closed, authentic or repros. Just want to get an idea.
Thanks.

I'm selling the bag because it didn't suit my particular needs, but it's a good bag. The Gaiters, I thought the stamp was a 5, not an S! :eusa_doh:
I did a little digging. Turns out Olney makes 2 8-panel models. One is called the Newsboy, the other the Baker Boy. It seems like the Baker is a fuller cut, based on the vague listings I've seen.
I think, if it's a softer crown, just use the dents to dress it down, but store it without. Then it will be more formal for when you don't want to dress it down. ;)
This advice is sound once you know what you like. I say that because I made the mistake of buying good "real" panamas very early on. The actual straw of those hats are my favorite, but the styles are not. So, they get worn rather infrequently.
I say, start cheap and fake to learn...
I prefer my felts to be untapered, higher crowned, with a 2 5/8 or 2 3/4 inch brim.
In my quest for the right straw hats, I discovered that similar stats on a straw looked very big on me. I don't know if it's the light colors or the fact that I wear few (if any) layers of clothing. A...
That's why they are so addictive. There is nothing "stock" about a VS! Every time I put one on, I want to buy another one. :eusa_doh: I guess not being rich has it's up side; Art gets to sleep from time to time. lol
They do take getting used to, as the brim does nothing to hide the brow like a fedora does. But once you get accustomed to seeing more of your own face, they really are great. Also, I think you have the right face and head shape for one. So, wear it with confidence.
Real straw can get wet, just not soaked. That would be bad. But a little bit of water won't hurt it.
Fake straw is usually made of paper. I wouldn't dare use water on those.
I think you've found the ideal 8-panel there.
As for a lighter weight cap, I would think the extra full might feel like too much material in warmer months. I would go down to a full cut.
