Aero are basically a small family firm who make great leather jackets for a worldwide clientele. Their pricing strategy is pretty rudimentary and seems to be based on keeping headline prices low whilst meeting their required minimum (and probably relatively modest) return on investment, hence...
I'm definitely repeating myself, but I reckon weight is the simplest guide. A few weights were given earlier which indicates that around 2.5kg or 5.5lbs is a reasonable guide for an FQHH 42" short Half Belt. We saw crazy numbers about 50% higher which were confirmed by Holly as steer.
I think you did the right thing. If it doesn't feel right, then it'll gnaw away at you, you won't wear it and you'll eventually get a replacement anyway. That happened to me twice.
Better to bite the bullet, get over it asap and get something that works for you. At least you can fine tune...
As it seems that a number of people suddenly left Aero, the reality is that the sudden loss of income (and reputation!) in a relatively deprived area in the middle of a recession will almost certainly outweigh any short-term gains that may have been made.
That alone will probably have a...
Actually, one person is named and another's position is mentioned (p3), so that's two. Whether they're guilty and acted alone will be for the courts to decide, but until then we can speculate if such an alleged operation could be limited to two people and some here clearly find that impossible...
I admit I'm being generous there, but given how hard it is to tell the difference, maybe they couldn't tell. That will no doubt be their defence if they get dragged into court.
It must have seemed such easy money a few months ago.
There's no reason the machinists would necessarily be involved, as they would simply put together what was given to them and would neither know nor care what the buyer ordered.
If any machinists left a month or two ago, then that may (or may not) have been coincidence.
Having had the "pleasure" of sitting on a jury for a serious crime trial at the High Court in Edinburgh last year, I would say any trial is probably a year or so away, so I doubt very much if we'll see anything until late 2013.
The more serious cases are heard there and I can say from...
Maybe we should all take a deep breath and step back from drowning Aero in an avalanche of perfectly good returned steerhide jackets. As nobody seems to have noticed the difference, and probably wouldn't have if the weight issue hadn't come up, why not just keep the jackets and see if there...
Regius, Aero have said that no vintage FQHH was involved in this problem, so as long as it was indeed vintage you should be fine. However, from what I saw at the Aero factory yesterday, the simplest check is by comparing the weight, with steer being noticeably heavier.
As Johannes says...
I'm afraid Johannes has a HWM, which should weigh significantly less than an LHB, probably less than his 2.4kg/5.3lbs 1950s HB.
jlanderson, just realised you probably meant Joakim (wild_balls). His 38" HWM looks fine for FQHH, at around 2.3kg/5lb, making Johannes's and Colorado's look very...
Colorado, if I was a betting man, and using yours, Johannes's and my weights, I would put a few Euros on Johannes's 1950s being FQHH and both his and your HWM being something else.
I think that steer might work out at around 1.2 or 1.3 times the equivalent FQHH (based on Holly's weights on page...
The label on my first HWM said FQHH, but it turned out to be an infernal mixture of steer, horse and possibly any other passing quadruped.
The steer HWM I got as a replacement yesterday from the factory originally had 2 FQHH labels. When Aero discovered the problem, they replaced the main...
Lungomare, interesting question. My 38" FQHH Stockman is 2.65kg, my 40" vintage FQHH Teamster is 2.35kg and my 40" steer HWM is 2.65kg. As steer is heavier, my results stack up.
I reckon your HWM is elephant hide. :) I heard one went missing from the Galashiels circus when your jacket...
Highwayman's are famous for their boxy shape, so a 46 might work if you like a neater look. This seems a good deal - http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/product-detail.php?id=1172
Fanch, I'm surprised how difficult it is for a layman to tell the difference, which shows how important it is to be able to trust the manufacturer. I also have a vintage black FQHH Teamster which has a lovely glow to it, so I'm sure you'll love your new HWM.
Jack, I deliberately didn't say...
Good Thing 1: Just back from picking up my new FQHH Stockman, after the last one came with sleeves at least 1" less than specced. Interestingly, this time the cordovan is a much richer, darker colour, which is fine by me. A nice touch was that I was offered a choice of two identical Stockmans...
The grain differences are too subtle for me. Which colours and types does this apply to - normal/vintage? I have a normal cordovan and vintage black "FQHH" both made in May.
It's interesting that none of the purchasers seemed to notice the difference, especially after all the minutiae regarding grain etc that's gone into on this site. Goat yes, steer no, it seems.
Also very upfront of Aero, as they could easily have swept this under the carpet with the odd...
