I received my black Stratoliner from DelMonico yesterday. I'm very impressed with the hat. The felt is very soft and was easy to hand crease without the need of any steam. The liner and sweatband are very classy too. I did remove the plastic airplane pin and replaced it with a sterling silver...
Rusty,
My subscription list and email was still accurate so I tried changing my email to another address of mine. That seems to have corrected the problem. I'm now receiving notifications again.
David,
Great buy on that Stetson 25 and Stratoliner box. I almost bid on it for the box and wanted to take a closer look at the hat even though it wouldn't fit me. It looks like it has a Playboy style ribbon but the brim is bound too. Neat looking hat. I hope it works out for you. I'd love to...
Great job on those hats guys!
John, I have used Woolite and hand washed in cold water an old Stetson liner with decent results. It didn't fade but you could still see the outline of the sweat stains. I didn't get too aggressive with the hand washing though.
I have had good luck with the method that Tom suggested. After gently hand washing the ribbon then I ironed the ribbon while it was still damp with a warm iron. The iron was not very hot at all and did not cause any shrinkage. After that I laid it out flat and let it dry. You could probably do...
I'm not getting my email notifications of posts to my subscription list any more. This just started a few days ago. Is anybody else having this problem?
Sorry about posting this here but I didn't know where else to post it. Thanks.
Rob,
I don't think Hanks' hat brim is quite that long. My guess would be a 2 3/4" brim. It looks like a very tall crown too. Probably 6" when open crown and maybe 4 3/4" to 5" when creased. I think your guess on the ribbon is about right.
Che, that's a real beauty!
I almost ordered the black Strat too when I called Jeff but went with the mink instead. However, I have a feeling if these hats turn out to be as nice as they look in the pictures I will probably order a black one too!
Tom, nice looking leather bands!
pfisto22, I would definitely let Art put a ribbon on it when it is made and then decide later if you want to put a leather band. Art's ribbon work is truly incredible and it would be a shame to miss out on it. You can always put a leather band on it later if...
Thanks guys and thanks Tim for taking the time to send the pictures. It is pretty cool to be able to see your hat go from a felt blank to the finished product. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person.
PS: Che, I thought you might like those pictures of it "brim up" :)
mmbarnes,
Nice find. I believe your Open Road was made in the 1970's, possibly 80's. I had one with the diamond liner that came with the box and receipt. The receipt was dated 1975. It has been my experience, the Open Roads with the diamond liners seem to be the last "soft" Open Roads.
Hat Process (cont.)
Here are some more pictures of my silverbelly being made. In these pictures Tim was showing me the center dent crease with a possible ribbon combination. It is a very cool vintage ribbon with a whiskey colored highlight in the bow keeper. I ended up going with a version of...
