Well it's always one of those culture things. P-3 and P-8 guys are probably in just as much danger of fire as anyone else in a military airplane. Perhaps there is an increased danger for the guys around the carrier or because the fast movers tend to intentionally poke their noses into places...
I can only speak for my time, but the jet guys rarely wore their G-1s in the cockpit, primarily for two reasons:
1. With its polyester collar, cuffs, and lining the G-1 just doesn't do much for you in a fire. While there is nothing written expressly forbidding it, most pilots tended to avoid...
Thanks Warhawk,
These are always interesting discussions and I don't want to come across as going after the Cockpit. You could take a look at Orvis' RAF sweater, find pics of the originals here and see why they altered it...the originals fit like baggy tents. But it's hard to know when you...
Hey Warhawk, welcome back.
Did you ever come across anything in reference to the leather tabs at the bottom of only a few maker's G-1s, whether or not Avirex in the past shared jacket makers with the other jackets who share this attribute, or anything along those lines?
I'd love to hear what...
Hehe, I don't doubt it. The length of that thing must have made tailstrikes a definite possibility.
In my case at least, the plane is supposed to be landed on the tail! :D
LOL, there is always one!
Reminds me of my favorite, almost certainly untrue, flying story...
A student and his instructor were flying in the alert area in Pensacola. Alert areas are multi-use so everyone uses a common frequency, like CTAF but area specific.
This particular student was flying a maneuver which called...
Belleville is the issuer of the modern Navy brown flight boot. Not quite as pretty as the old officer boots. But they are super comfortable and steel toed, which has its virtues.
Also, Boeing has a series of shirts from all the companies they swallowed over the years, including North American...
Looks great man! Huh, I've never been an inspiration.
More generally I serve as a cautionary tale!
I hope it works for ya Bretta, it's a damn fine looking jacket.

Thanks Pauleway. A bit of it is the picture which makes it just slightly deeper in shade than in the sun, but it is a very nice shade of orange.
This is actually a bit of a Frankencollar. I was still on active duty when I got this jacket and was hoping to be able to wear this...at least...
Love the jacket pics Gal! If you have a short torso and long arms, the Cockpit is your jacket!
Actually, as I said, they measure similarly. But the knits on the Cockpit make it fit a hair shorter in the torso.
Have you considered a custom fit jacket from Steve Sellers or Aero? Near the...
New member WARHAWK is apparently on the board at The Cockpit (formerly synonymous with Avirex)...you could PM him.
I don't recall Avirex making jumpsuits, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
I would have expected something like that to come from Gibson and Barnes (formerly Flight Suits...
