Well of course, without having a supply of Coopers, Schotts, Pharrs, and Excelleds (did I miss any?), I can't tell you what the labels all say, but there is a Cooper on the Bay with no blue label that specifically says "goatskin" according to the guy who is selling them. The same as my blue...
It's a good looking jacket Peter.
I was actually hoping to see something recently issued, like a 2016, just to see the state of the art in fit and quality.
Interestingly, I just spoke with a jacket vendor on eBay regarding one of his issue Coopers (i.e. no blue label which if I understand correctly is a dead giveaway).
The side tag on the Cooper reads that the shell is indeed made of goatskin. So if the post '84 spec does specify cow, there were...
Actually, the Excelleds really look good on you guys.
But here's two pics in the last two years or so of my Pharr and my Cooper,
To my eye, the Cooper looks so much better on me than the Pharr. Some of it is cut, but some is just the droopiness of the leather.
I look like I'm in my third...
That is fascinating stuff Peter! This was much as I surmised about the Coasty G-1s, though it seems to have been going on from much longer than I ever thought.
As I said before, I'm not surprised that the CG buys their own stuff aftermarket...if they got it through the NAVAIR supply chain...
It does surely look like a USW G-1.
It's nice to see an actual Coastie wearing one....though I think she could go down a size!
On the Cockpit 100 Missions G-1 thread, you'll see that the Cockpit also claims to be a supplier to the Navy and the CG according to the website. That's why having...
Wow, this thread has blown my mind in at least two different ways.
1. So, are you saying that NO jacket made post 1984 is made of goat? I would have swore that my issued Cooper was goat and the blue label (aftermarket of course) actually says "goatskin" on the label. That would completely...
Hey Peter, can I ask how you know that is a US Wings?
If it is, it would have answered about a dozen threads on the subject. I see the curved pocket flaps and no seam on the bottom tabs, so two things that narrow the field considerably!
I actually thought the same thing.
I don't want to get too down on the Cockpit or any other company. I understand that these guys are in business to sell jackets and you sell the dream as much as the product.
But having been the guy that walks around in his Banana Republic, removable collar...
Wow, that's an Excelled? That is a nice looking jacket! What year is that from?
My Cooper (both the one that was issued to me and the one I recently bought) are goatskin. I think the spec allows for both and it has gone back and forth over the years.
Great post Skyhawk. As long as we didn't wear it in formation, us Yuma guys seemed to be far enough away from the flagpole so that we could wear a reasonable aftermarket jacket (no chesnut brown leather or blonde collars).
Agreed. As it is important to some people, I'm always a little...
Here's my Pharr (Left) and Cooper (Right). What I find weird is that the left side of the Pharr is at least wrinkled whereas the right side is still very smooth. Again, the Cooper is only one year old.
A closeup of the pockets.

Could you guys post pics of your Excelleds?
For my own part, I just could never love my 2004 Pharr. Leather or finishing, I don't know but it always seemed to just hang on me and never got that great broken in look that my old Cooper has.
Heck, my very recent Cooper seems to have more...
That's interesting that the Cockpit you have is from 2007. Later than I had thought.
What you've said is about my understanding of it and relates to our earlier discussion about marketing.
Still, contracts change all the time and I am reluctant to say anything definitive about the Cockpit...
Thanks again Peter. Can you make out the year that jacket was made from the serial number...the two digits are still the manufacture year if I understand correctly.
More generally, I'd like to hear what Warhawk has to say on the matter of both the A-2 and the G-1 vis-a-vis the item...
I'm sorry, I should have been more specific.
I know Avirex had been one of the original suppliers to the USAF. But is the Cockpit currently contracted to do so? It's that part of "accepted issue jacket" that I'd like to understand.
Peter, you may have answered my question but I just want to...
Interesting. We attach a lot of romance to the leather jacket. But it was a piece of flight gear and I've no doubt that Hap didn't think twice about replacing it in wartime for something that was warmer or cheaper to purchase.
As for the Cockpit being an "accepted issue jacket", I'm curious...
No doubt we all appreciate the qualities of a really quality jacket. I'm not sure that the masses are quite so discerning.
As to the civil guys, most of the big carriers have uniform jackets...no getting your own, sadly.

For the same reason that the A-2 was reissued to the Air Force about 50 years after it was discontinued. It's an esprit de corps item like medals, badges, insignia, etc.
But like I said, the haulers and helo guys still wear the jacket for flight. It is not specifically forbidden, though the...
