LOL, these conversations are always rousing. I kind of sit in the middle.
There's nothing wrong with a $300 (or cheaper) jacket IMO. Some of them are quite nice. And I do agree that there is a non-linear cost/quality curve as you progress up the ladder....not always justified I think.
I do...
Very good point!
Although, I'm not sure that calling what we wear today in our unisex, one size fits all, culture "fashion" isn't a bit like confusing airline food with "cuisine". :)
Personally, I think he still would look better in the A-2 he wore in Hannover Street
Great looking jacket Steve!
Now you need to rub up against some dirty fuselages and break that baby in.
Find a Harrier, that thing was always leaking something! ;)

Actually from what I understand, the ELC G-1 is based on the first LW Foster contract which had a wide back, big armholes, and a well proportioned waist.
I don't know how the sizes match exactly, but I think ELC did a good job of picking a flattering contract.
From Moore's site:
And, while...
My ELC is about three years old now as a reference.
I'd say that their G-1 fits true to size to maybe a half size bigger. I can't quite pull off a 46 in most issue jackets, but can in the ELC.
Two things to note about the ELC version:
1. The ELC is based on a model of the jacket that was...
I think that, as much as anything, the goal of the A-1 collar is to keep the wind out. Wind at that speed gets into every crack and can balloon out the whole jacket which could be pretty annoying. The other part I'm thinking is to be able to do "something" with the collar.
Like the original...
Nice jacket Tex!
Actually looks better than the pics on the website which have a few odd features.
The US Authentic isn't my favorite variation on the jacket, but it certainly looks like a well made garment.
Wear it in good health!

I used to be a big visitor to the Cockpit back in the 80s-90s and IIRC they were pretty big on cow.
The horsehide A-2 was generally a bit of a special edition, and don't recall them ever making goat A-2s back then.
Not definitive, but odds are it's cow.

Same with me. I think that is how most people get their start. Understanding that you don't have a jacket to get measurements from, you can certainly get an idea with any windbreaker type jacket I think.
Find a jacket that fits you, get some measurements for an idea, and go from there...
I could be wrong and USWings might be changing around their stock somewhat, but it isn't uncommon for a company to sell out around Christmas and then replenish their stock in the following months.
For instance, LL Bean and Danner are both pretty big companies where I've seen this happen.
Did...
Yeah, just remember that it only takes you a couple seconds to get out of the cockpit...now.
I've seen more than a few accidents where they had to cut the guy out. If you're in a flaming ball of wreckage, you are right in that it won't matter. For something less than that, you might just save...
You know, Weight Watchers is far less invasive....I'm just saying.
Welcome back man who so recently had been Big J. ;-)

I personally like the style of the Nomex better. The collar and useful pockets appeal to me stylistically and I like the flatter sheen of the Nomex.
Still some of that is the general quality of the after market nylon. The older, flatter ma-1s look much better to me.
Nothing wrong with...
You're welcome Thor. I was wearing my Cooper today. It's really starting to break in well and, at the price, I don't get nervous climbing around the airplane in it.
Every time I see that vintage Cockpit G-1, I'm tempted to get one. Everyone I see it on looks good wearing it.
Hard to say why...
I wonder if that was considered a problem or a solution back then. We like aged looking stuff now, but pre-60s I wonder if faded meant "worn out" especially in the military.
Still, the Monarch collage that I posted above has some nice patina on that pocket flap. Maybe the tanning or how it...
I don't necessarily think all fake fur is made the same. But some of the fake collars on G-1s wind up looking, to borrow the phrase from a friend, like "a matted sheep dog's a**hole".
I don't think that is a particularly bad fit if a little long. Any way to see the grain up close? I've considered the USW jacket for a long time, but can't tell how it looks up close.
As you should be! Those guys that jump out of Helos are OK in my book...they were the ones who were going to pluck my behind out of the drink if I ever went in.
Like I said, a cow G-1 is rapidly becoming as much the norm as the goat. I just personally like the goatskin better from the looks...
