A handsome timepiece, Hawk Eye. I have its twin - my grandfather's. Alas, mine is stopped. I think the mainspring broke.
I was surprised by this as well, but am reminded of a fighter-pilot joke I once heard: "How do you tell a bomber pilot in the shower? He's the one with the big watch...
I rather suspected it might be the blades, but then I've met people who swear by deadstock old ones, so I thought I'd give them a try. Next time I'm at the drug store, I'll see if they have my brand in Treet.
Thanks John.

A Silly Question
As some of you may know, I’m usually in the habit of shaving with an old GEM Micromatic and C.O. Bigelow shaving cream - I haven’t posted here in some time because, well, the routine rarely changes.
The other day I was at a garage sale and happened on a few old Gillette...
What I'm searching for in a car:
1. pre-1965 (unless it's a few particular vehicles like a Plymouth Valiant)
2. Something with decent aftermarket/restoration support (probably meaning Ford, Chevy, Plymouth, Dodge, AMC - but I'll consider anything)
3. Something not too big (probably no...
Spade & Archer
Does anyone have any screen captures that show Sam Spade’s office from The Maltese Falcon? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film, and I don’t own it.

This is a 1937 Chrysler Royal business coupe. It’s like the big brother to the ‘38 Plymouth business coupes Bogie drove on the silver screen.
Someone with a car trailer and $5000.00 should come to mid-Michigan, buy this old girl, and restore her to her former glory. This is advertised on...
Inspired by the “vintage office” posts on here, a couple days ago I bought this lot of Swingline staplers on eBay. They arrived today and I was able to inspect them. Three of the four are the old “Swingline 27" that was introduced in 1952. The third appears to be a Model 747 (the “Office...
I’m glad to hear it. Now the only question that remains is whether I can use hunter green shades on a mint green garage. I suppose I could strip and repaint them, but I’d hate to lose that original patina, plus I think replicating the baked-enamel finish would be tough.

I just bought a house, constructed c. 1904, with a garage that’s only a few years newer (and huge, the original owners must have driven Packards or Locomobiles or something). I’m thinking about adding some exterior lighting to the garage for security and utility purposes.
To that end, I’m...
I LOVE this hat, but I'm sure it must be vintage, so there's no chance of my ever finding one.
Correct me if I'm wrong, fellas, but the "straw" fedoras sold in places like Target and Walmart are Milans, right?

Despite the national focus on the failings of the domestic auto industry, it's not Detroit's auto-centric economy that's keeping the city down. I don't think I'm talking politics when I say - the Detroit city counsel is a freakshow and is the biggest thing holding back that once-great city...
I can't believe I missed this reply. My desk is also a 66" model, the angle in the photograph just makes it look shorter. My lower right drawer is a file drawer as well, with two normal drawers above. By "signed" do you mean the Stowe-Davis stamp? That's on the left panel of my center...
Got a reply regarding my Helios.
Per a suggestion here, I wrote to the modern Helios company regarding my grandfather’s watch. I got back what I suspect is a cut-and-paste response regarding black faced watches. I say this because I didn’t include a picture of the caseback, yet he references...
I just purchased a late-‘40s or early-‘50s Caloric range like the one in the ad (not identical, but very close):
It’s in beautiful condition and 99% complete. However, it is missing one of the tubes for the standing pilot light on the left side of the cooktop.
By chance does anyone...
Henrys were made here in Muskegon. The factory still stands. I've never seen one outside of old photographs (which, of course, are all on my other computer). I'll have to rent this film.
They were mainly sold back east. I didn't think any existed any longer.

PS BT's link is to...
I haven't tried either of these guys (but I fully intend to when money isn't so tight), but Indy Magnoli and Matt Deckard seem to be the go-to guys around here for quality reproductions of menswear. I'm sure PMing either will give you a good idea of what to order.
As for me, I'll be keeping...
I wondered about this - what are their differences? If I had to guess, I'd say that Art's hats are crafted in a more vintage style and that the Optimo hats are styled in a more contemporary manner, is that correct?
