Radial Wave Shades - When were they introduced?

I just bought a house, constructed c. 1904, with a garage that’s only a few years newer (and huge, the original owners must have driven Packards or Locomobiles or something). I’m thinking about adding some exterior lighting to the garage for security and utility purposes.

To that end, I’m going to take back some old radial-wave shades on goosenecks that I once gave to my dad for a project that never materialized.

I’m wondering, though, how long that design has been around. To me they typify a ‘30s or ‘40s gas station (though mine came from a summer camp that has been around since 1925).

It won’t really influence my decision one way or another, as I think they’ll look great on my old garage, but I’m still curious.

I've seen streetscape pictures where these were being used as street lights as far back as 1910, so they probably go back even further. They were pretty much obsolete for street use by the mid-thirties, except in small towns where you'll still find them occasionally. The next town over from me has them all thru its downtown area.

I’m glad to hear it. Now the only question that remains is whether I can use hunter green shades on a mint green garage. I suppose I could strip and repaint them, but I’d hate to lose that original patina, plus I think replicating the baked-enamel finish would be tough.
