Okay, here are some photos of the 5X Clear Beaver hat I've
mentioned a few times (and Dinerman posted once already!).
I'll start with what I believe to be the original box. Yes, that's
a real leather strap on top. Heavy box. Closeup of the logo
sticker for those who care...
I was waiting for someone who owns both to post.
I've seen a lot of wool bowlers. Not a one that looks at
all like a bowler to the trained eye. The brim is all wrong.
Nice as the Beaver Brand bowler is (and it looks great here...
I was just teasing, really. But do remember that my 5X
hat is stamped 1942. Okay, okay, I'll post pix soon.
JtL, I didn't mention the logo in particular, but the liner
in general. I'm glad to defer to you, since you've made
more of a study of Stetson logos than I ever have. I...
"The 7X, along with the Stetson 100, were Stetson's two pure beaver offerings."
I'm gonna throw out my 5X Clear Beaver.
Interesting to see the date 1965 stamped so prominently
on the sweatband. I might have dated it earlier.
Just my opinion...
Thanks for the shots, HPG.
My impression is that the optimo block looks a bit more
formal. It's just not as flexible a style as the classic
"dented" fedora. As I mentioned earlier, the optimo
form also looks "of an era" and inherently a bit more dated
than the more...
I can't speak to your newer Bailey boxes.
As a rule, the older the paper (or cardboard) the
less likely it has a high acid content. I have long suspected
that the discoloration we see in hats is not from the box but
from bleed from the leather sweatband.
I don't know that felt has to...
I was struck by the same thing. But I realized it's more accurately a
lack of snap brim fedoras. If you look carefully you'll see they aren't
precisely homburgs. Back then the lines between fedora and homburg
weren't as clear.
Look at the "homburgs". You'll see many of the edges are...
I won't just... aw, okay, I will- that's a great find!
Glad it's in good hands.
HPG, why not post a picture of yourself wearing
an optimo blocked panama and let us see what
all the women are talking about? I happen to know
you have a few such pictures in your photo account.
I am very...
Why do you say No 1 Quality is below Royal Stetson?
No 1 Quality is a Western line, where Royal Stetson is
a dress felt line. Apples and oranges it seems to me.
Speaking for my own 30s No. 1 Stetson, the felt is so
different, I couldn't compare it to any dress felt. Certainly
not as...
I think people often mistake personal taste or cultural notions of
"well proportioned" with absolute principles. I know a number of
people who don't find men attractive until they are quite large
(and a leather jacket would be considered a plus). I know some
very unhealthy skinny people...
Hm,
I own two vintage bowlers, one Mallory and one Stetson (with
the Stetson dating to at least the 20s). They are both quite stiff,
of course, but the felt is also quite thin. No way they could have
been made using layers as Charlie Huang describes. So I suggest
that even in the good...
Why do you call it a Lee? It's a Stevens.
I have a Stevens 3X from around the same period
with similar or identical tags and liner
(it has a self-felt edge and you can use that info
to look up images here if you are curious) that sure
doesn't have that odd feature.
I'd be curious to know if...
Shudde Bros STETSON.
Now that was a real steal... or would have been if they
had managed to find a size tag. Nutria, kettle finish... really nice
and fairly rare.
