If I were you, I'd take it out of the closet and try to
brush it off the hat ASAP, to limit the damage. You
said it didn't soak through, so get it off before it does
more harm. Use a stiffer brush than a hat brush (maybe a
suede brush). Find out what's in that hair goo an use a
solvent...
Is this the same Mitsukoshi Stetson that has been listed repeatedly
on eBay for years? Looks like it. I wonder if it finally found a new
home for $10.
I believe this old thread referred to the same hat.
Those are great.
Have you treated that leather with anything?
I have a similar era leather USPS bag and I wonder
if I should treat it with something.
I am also nearly desperate to have a strap for it,
if anyone knows a source of a decent quality leather strap
with a vintage look.
I posted one a few pages back:
http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showpost.php?p=777790&postcount=617
As you can see, it was a quality designation, or product line,
not a specific design. Varied greatly over the years.
Johnson Leathers?
You might try Johnson Leathers of San Francisco.
I know they duplicated another Lounger's grandfather's
jacket a couple of years ago. You can search here to
see the original photo and the jacket they made.

I don't think Panama Bob's genuine concern for the weavers
and the future of hat weaving is best served by Panama Bob's
vitriolic posts. I don't have a hard time believing that many of
the weavers are not paid well. I don't doubt that shady deals
are made that take advantage of the...
Easy for you to say, Lefty, but the paint on those plates tastes terrible.
And Brad, I appreciate the offer...
Thanks to all and keep those comments coming.
Okay, Highlander, you've inspired me to set a poll for this thread.
Everyone should feel free to weigh in. I don't promise to abide by
the result, but I do promise to learn from it.
I have a hard time with the idea of having a hat I can't wear
(especially if it fits me). I do collect...
mystic edge
BTW, that liner is so lush, just looking at it makes
me want to put on the hat. As if it would be like
wearing a satin pillow on one's head.
Okay, now it's my daily beater. I'll wear it walkin' the dog.
Thanks for all the research, Corky. More than I came up
with (and I spent years studying that period of American history).
Given that they were giving away a cowboy hat, I wonder if they
were aware of the...
So what's going on with that "mystic edge"?
Did they put padding under the brim binding to
create a sort of Cavanagh Edge-bound brim effect?
Does it simply have a double binding?
It's tagged 7 3/8, but it's quite spacious.
I did stretch it slightly, but just slightly, and
it is snug but quite comfortable on my 7 1/2 LO head.
Probably the easiest hat I have ever stretched.
I can hear the sobbin' all the way from Detroit...
Now I have to buy ya two mai tais next...
Man, what a whiner. I'll see what I can do.
But I don't have an infinite supply of treasures to show.
There are people here who have troves of incredible hats
we've never seen.
Andykev?
Analogist?
Garrett?
Did I say Analogist?
I have the impression the back rooms of Bencraft Hats...
I shot the picture to emphasize the weave, not
to give a good sense of proportion. That's about a 5 1/2 inch
crown and a 2 1/4 inch brim. It looks very old fashioned and
straight up and down on the head. That might be because it
is old...
This was another classic case of a poorly listed ebay...
You just want to see if the size tag indicates your size, JtL.
I'm too lazy to take more pix of that hat for now, but it's stitched.
Oh, and it was originally from Washer Bros. of Ft. Worth. And yeah, eBay,
as Dinerman can confirm.
Glad everyone is enjoying this one.
Interesting!
The New Deal might well have used celebrities to give out these
prizes. Honestly, I had never bothered to figure out who Bill Boyd
might have been. Now I'm even more scared to wear it!
As for the crown shape, not to be spoiled, but I already keep
my Clear Nutria in more or...
Another optimo
Since we've been bothering poor old HPG about the optimo block,
I thought I'd post my "other" optimo. I'm guessing it's 20s or 30s.
Obligatory ruler shot:
Here's what we long oval unfortunates live for:
And here is the odd liner. Like a boater:
Finally...
Churchill Beaver 35
I see that Churchill is followed by a question mark in the list.
Here's one. It's a Churchill 35 with very nice, fine, kinda stiff
felt. A bit like the felt on the Cavanagh 100 I just posted in the
Conversion Corral. A nice hat, if I do say so myself.
Cavanagh 100 "Denver" converted by Art
Here's one I've had for a few years, but recently rediscovered.
I think you'll find it interesting. It came to me in a more-or-less
Open Road block. But it's a 60s hat and had very sharp, narrow
ridges on top and generally looked bad to me. So I sent...
