One thing I do is flip out the sweat if it is supple enough, stretch the felt with a domed stretcher, not hatjack type, flip the sweat back in & stretch it. Reduces the impression some.
You're working with blocks which I haven't yet....
I've bought from DM, EA & Hats Direct, all good sources.
They each have colors of some models the other one doesn't like David Morgan has some special models too.
Hats Direct is only source for Heritage Campdrafts & both models of Federation IV.
(Oops - forgot about my Bushman!)
Use cold water to soften wool felt hat for reshaping & let it dry slowly = dark, cool place.
Lots of wool hats are treated with waterproofing like Scotchguard to repel water by the factory.
While steam deactivates shellac & loosens fur felt fibers, the hot water is bad for wool.
You'd never...
Microscopically, beaver fur fibers have more barbs than hare or rabbit & will "felt" tighter over time.
A hat body continues to felt until it reaches a state of "dead felt". Getting wet & drying effects this felting.
Modern hat bodies are moved from felting to finishing way faster than vintage...

The felt weakens in the folds of tight creases & will need to be re-blocked to go back to open crown.
See the damage to Johnny Depp's hat...

Yes, Campdrafts come open crown & you can put an alpine crease in them.
They are the Open Roads of Australia that Akubra private-labeled for Stetson.
They are heads above what you can get out of HatCo these days for about the same money.
Like Sam said, Moonstone is a lighter grey when...
Finding a vintage Stetson OR in a shade of grey will be a challenge.
I have a Knox 20 OR style hat that is more grey than any of my vintage Stetson OR's. The Stetson silverbelly does run to the tan side.
If you are interested in the Knox 20, here is a photo...What are you looking to spend?
I can see 43 workers being involved if you start with the fur selection to make the felt body.
For the year of time, back in the day felt bodies were allowed to age for long periods of time before being worked up into a finished hat.
Given stories from current day custom hatters, I am sure...
