What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Thanks Richard. The more brown looking photo is the accurate color of the felt.

    Open Road questions ??

Gotcha...Lots of subject matter on stretching but when I have to go over a size increment, I'm sending to a hatter for reblocking. Stretching depends highly on the condition of the sweatband you are working with IMO. I say "train" it to a larger size because it is an ongoing process in my...

    Post New Hats Here!

A size tag from that period for a Long Oval hat would be all yellow with Long Oval printed around the size.

WTB Stetson Open Road 7 5/8 Grey

Take a look at this hat that Sam sold recently. http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?71566-FS-Size-7-3-4-(fits-like-a-7-5-8)-Stetson-10x-Open-road-style-hat-225-shipped It is not as vintage in my book, only about 40 years old or so = mid 70's. It doesn't have the lower, post-HatCo crown...

Better Deal - Optimo or VS

Better deal question is about cost to value ratio....IMO, with both hatters you get what you pay for. Optimo has a brick & mortar presence that has to be covered in a hat's cost. Vintage Silhouette does not. Optimo has lots of shapes where Art does old style mainly. They get felt bodies from...

    Open Road questions ??

Almost forgot... as far as stretching goes, 7 3/8 to 7 5/8 is 2 sizes = 7 3/8, 7 1/2, 7 5/8. Not sure what 1/2 a size is... I have 3 7 1/2 Long Ovals that I have trained to be 7 5/8. I'd not attempt to do that with a 7 3/8. That would go off to a hatter to be torn down, reblocked & rebuilt.

    Open Road questions ??

Looking for vintage in our hat size, 7 5/8, you can't be too color selective. There are some nice OR's out there but majority will be in Silverbelly. True, Resistol, Knox, etc. have a more silver/grey than Stetson's, which is more tan. If you ever get your hands on a nice vintage Silverbelly...

    Stetson Austral Question

Yep, Doc. That is pretty much it. I have a straight sided dome shaper that I use to take to open crown so I can crease again = http://www.hatshapers.com/Product%20Pages/Straight_Sided_Dome.htm The key is get one that is tall enough to reach the top of the crown & get the sweatband over the...

    Question About Re-Blocking A Hat

Re-blocking & sizing down are possible but the 2 areas of impact are the brim break & where the sweat is stitched in, which are usually the same place. That break & stitching makes for a weak area in the felt that can tear when getting worked over a block by a hatter. Sizing down means the break...
