I feel the same. I'm very careful with all my vintage property. Most of mine usually have tiny tears, weird folds, little pins/rust on them, the occasional big tear... They only get used once at best -- twice if I like them enough. I do "collect" them -- but, like you, I collect them to SEW...
Yup, I use the original. All patterns I've used are still in perfect shape because I'm careful. I work and have a husband -- I don't have time to trace everything I own. It would be nice, but it's not possible.
A loaner from sixsexsix (aka Michelle)
This is my most favouritest dress I've made thus far. I'm almost tempted to buy or trade this pattern from Michelle!!! Hehe! She probably wants it back because it's so darn awesome, but copies will be made!
I'm going to make it again in black...
Thanks girls!
I'm not sure what size it is yet. I tried to put it on but it was way too snug. My measurements are 37-30-39 so I'm just GUESSING right now that it's a 35-28-37. I'll take proper measurements when I'm all done.
Do you read my LJ? I'm amy_jeanne. When I'm done I'll...
I wear an 18, so whenever I buy patterns in a 20 I've been sewing them with a bigger seam allowance and they've all fit me perfectly. So I did the same for this. I guess this one ran smaller than my others. I'm going to make it with the correct seam allowance next time.
Or maybe the...
I've been with my husband for 5 years and he loves vintage, too. That's what drew us together -- a vintage community on Live Journal! He posted photos of Louise Brooks, Bettie Page, and himself and I was like "I'm marrying that dude!" He was in London and I in Philly. Didn't deter me!
But...
The sleeves and hem aren't finished yet, but it's lookin' okay.
I made it too small -- I'll probably sell it to one of my friends. I bought new material to re-make it in my size. It was so easy to make. The easiest pattern I've made thus far.
Everyone's stuff looks GREAT!!
RSG -- GRRRRR! Even though your dress looks EXCELLENT, I do feel your pain! I'm working on a Kay Francis "Hollywood" pattern right now and it doesn't fit me AT ALL! My own fault though -- it was a size 20 and figured I'd sew in an inch instead of half an inch...
The pants look good. The width looks pretty perfect for that late 30s/early 40s look. And I like the grey. The whole outfit reminds me of Kate Hepburn.
DPD - great overalls!! You got the bod for them, that's for sure!
As for my shiny fabric, it was called crepe something-or-other...
I really like the purple jacket, LD. Very flattering.
Here's what I made this week:
Made from crepe. It was hard to make in more ways than one :( The pattern was old and vague so I just made most of the dress freestyle! As you can see, it's a bit wonky :o I wasn't experienced...
It's the 1998 mainstream swing trend that got me hardcore into vintage and where I am today. I remember seeing BBVD in concert in the summer of '98 and seeing all the people dressed in their 30s and 40s gear. That was it. By September I was pretty obssessed with the 20s/30s/40s!! :)
And...
LD -- I'm random with all my buttons!! Whatever side I feel like putting them on is where they go! I get my left and right confused a lot :o
Kamikat -- DURRRHH!! I didn't even think about tracing the pattern! I have the perfect wide roll of parchment paper, too.
And thanks gals!
Thanks! You should make it. I'm going to return it this week. I don't know if you know, but the front bodice piece has a huge rip in it! I had a bit of a time finding my dart o's!!!
I didn't get a chance to make the other one. I ran out of fabric funds. But thank for letting me...
All the actresses of the 20s and 30s that I adore so much all do have very different "looks" and personalities (onscreen and off!) That's only because I've studied the crap outta them and have watched as many of their movies as humanly possible.
All the stars of today look the same to me...
I don't feel like I've had to give up anything. :)
But if my husband or I found ourselve jobless (FORBID!) I would miss all this stuff:
Starbucks
Sushi
Insta-Curry
Fabric
Patterns
1930s Movie mags
The very extra stuff that keeps me sane!
I think bigger women look really good in figure-hugging and narrow-skirted dresses such as this one. But, if it's the boob bunches -- I totally understand. :(
