    The Conversion Corral

Well, hello porkpie hat! I like it. Someday, I'd like to own a porkpie. Growing up near Muskegon*, it's almost a necessity. -Dave *Muskegon, Mich. is the location of Bluffton, the one-time actor's colony where Buster Keaton spent a good portion of his youth.

What pens are we carrying today?

The Prelude finally came back two days ago. A coworker found it in the upstairs copy room, but I'm not fooled. I'm sure it's been around the world at least once since it disappeared. You know, signing treaties, writing up contracts for Hollywood starlets, riding around in the pockets of...

favorite cars of the golden era

I absolutely love the '33 and '34 Pontiac roadsters. I think even just the hood ornament off one would be something killer to own. Actually, I'd love any of the streamlined Indian-head hood ornaments off a '30s-'50s Pontiac, mounted to a block of varnished wood and perched on my desk. -Dave

    Golden-Era Hot-Rodding

Pics? At least a really good description? You can't just tease us like that! -Dave

    Show us your Guns!

Are we talking about the Ruger Vaquero? The one that is patterned after the Colt Single Action Army? I think those are supposed to rotate back in your hand, to ease working the hammer after each shot. Or are you saying it’s hard to hold onto in some other respect? -Dave

Ask a question, get an answer

This is not strictly a Golden Era question, but I can’t think of a better place to ask: Why do so many communities have streets named Euclid? Was the mathematician that greatly admired, or is there another source for the name? -Dave

Color of Vintage Navy vs. Modern Navy?

To further muddy things, I have a pair of slacks in what was termed "Federal blue" that is somewhere between Navy and Midnight. lol I think it's called Federal after the color of Union Army jackets from the Civil War. -Dave

    seersucker suits

It’s the wrong season, but I picked up a couple of seersucker suits from Jos. A. Banks recently. I got the traditional blue, of course (and have yet to pick it up), and decided to get a red one as well. The red one fits great, and I can’t wait to wear it. I’m probably going to mostly use...

favorite cars of the golden era

Oh, I did not intend to besmirch the quality of the build, I just meant that the styling brought to mind the popular “home-built sports car” movement of the 1950s. Then again, some cars just don’t photograph well, either. I never liked the 1958-1960 Lincoln, for example, until I saw a ‘59 in...

favorite cars of the golden era

Oh yes, I love the Model 77s. I’m particularly fond of the Australia-only roadster: -Dave

favorite cars of the golden era

See, I'd rather have the Willys. The Aero just looks homebuilt and unfinished to me. Different strokes, I guess. -Dave

    Golden-Era Hot-Rodding

Very neat. My great grandfather had a Ford in that era too, but I’m fairly well certain it was a stock touring car, and not a speedster. I still have one of the cowl lamps and the tail lamp, amazingly. -Dave

Self Help Books in the 1950s

Gosh but I am tired of those. It’s so easy to be cynical, but at least those folks seem like they were earnestly trying to make the world better, and not just smirking at its foibles. -Dave

    World War I ended . . . last Sunday!

Okay, I’ll be the devil’s advocate here: Germany made reparations the problem, not France or Great Britain. Right-wing elements in Weimar deliberately caused hyper-inflation in the ‘20s to make it easier to pay down that debt in de-valued Reichmarks; hurting the people, building resentment...

    Boater faction!

I exchanged e-mails with the management at Henry the Hatter in Detroit, and now have a calendared appointment to call them in late March 2011 to check on their shipment of Italian boaters. I just purchased two seersucker suits for next year, so I’ve got to acquire appropriate headgear. ;)...

"Mad Men" on AMC (US) - (Spoilers Within)

I watched every season until now faithfully, but never got into this season and have only seen one episode. It's funny, but I don't find I miss it. Real life is stressful enough without having to deal with Betty Draper. -Dave

What do you use to shave?

That's the one. Mine may not be "clog pruf", but I don't mind rinsing a bit more frequently. I'd do it anyway, a holdover from my days with a cartridge razor. -Dave

    Reproduction classic workwear

My wife had a similar problem with a raincoat a while back. We discovered there was a tag inside the coat with a circuit in it for security purposes, and she had failed to cut it out, as instructed. -Dave

    HAPPY FELT HAT DAY!

As I think I stated elsewhere, I view the period between Labor Day and September 15 as a discretionary period. Before that, I really try to avoid standard-weight felts, and after today I really try to avoid straw. This is me in Michigan, of course, YMMV with geography: I think if I were in...

What do you use to shave?

Such a great razor. Mine lacks the "clog pruf" slogan, and just has "GEM MICROMATIC" in a deco font. I wonder if that's older or newer? -Dave
