Ask a question, get an answer

Well, if it's not worth a re-block. Maybe fill up the tub and dunk it, then let it dry very slowly in the shape of your choice? -Dave

If it's worth it, send it to a hatter and have it re-blocked. -Dave

    Boater faction!

No. I'm speaking of north of the Mason-Dixon line. I know nothing of Southern or Tropical traditions. I would assume on the equator, straw and linen are appropriate year round. -Dave

    Boater faction!

Modern usage has summer clothing (i.e. "white shoes") forbidden after Labor Day. Traditionally, September 15 was more like it. I treat this period as discretionary: I wore a panama and bucs on Tuesday, because it was 80 degrees, but I've been wearing felt since, as it's been cooler. -Dave

    I love the Fed IV!!

Well, it must be fall. I broke out my Aero (customized dark brown Fed IV Deluxe) today. I’ve missed it. I think it has missed me, too, as it seems to have returned to a regular round oval in my absence. -Dave

    Boater faction!

I went to the [political party withheld] State Convention here in Michigan last month, and saw but one boater. I myself wore a panama, but I think a boater will be in order for future events. -Dave

    ALIEN....the prequel?

Finding this on the Fedora Lounge, I expected to hear that the Aliens crashed in New Mexico in 1947, and the U.S. Army had to wipe them out and cover up the evidence. [huh] That reminds me, I once wrote up a draft script of an alien-invasion movie set immediately after World War Two, that...

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

Not to pick nits, but despite its fixed, metal roof, that's a sedan. Hardtops lack B pillars. Either way, I agree that it's a gorgeous car. The '51 to '54 Packards are seriously underrated cars, IMO. -Dave

    Show us your Guns!

I missed this inquiry about the Model 19 before. The Model 19 was the first revolver I fired (not counting a Dan Wesson .22). It remains one of my favorites, and is an extremely pleasant shooter with .38 Specials or +Ps. I have a strong sentimental attachment to that one in particular. My...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

Almost certainly a complete runner. I don't think he's very mechanical, so anything that needs to be gotten running will probably be a noncontender. I thought the Pacific Northwest had a pretty good supply of oldies. Before I stopped reading the national auto swappers, I thought I recalled...

It's not being a Newbie. There's no photo uploading on the board at all. It's strictly external hosting via Photobucket or the like. V8 Fairlane, or I6? -Dave

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I agree 100%, and I intend to have the wheels powdercoated gloss black. But, because they are rusty, they really need to be sandblasted first, and I haven’t had the time or access to a sandblaster. They aren’t hurting anything, or in any danger of deteriorating more, so for now they’ll stay...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

Welcome to the lounge. It sounds as though we have similar philosophies where vehicles are concerned. I will add, though, that carefully selecting a vehicle that uses a lot of reproduced parts can make driving an oldie far less painful (‘55-‘57 Chevies, for example). That’s one reason I...

favorite cars of the golden era

Wow, apparently I was way off. This website indicates that this isn’t a homebuilt job, but rather the sole surviving 1932 Hupmobile speedster. Can anyone confirm? -Dave

    Our own vintage town

Just how big is this city supposed to be anyway? I’ve been thinking along the lines of Pre-War Saginaw. Diamondback: Interesting! I love railroad stuff. You mentioned a family connection to the NYC, do you still have a hand in? Maybe you should be running the Depot in our little town...

There are a fair number of 1950s-vintage locomotives running around on Michigan short lines. -Dave
