There's room for all kinds of bars -- a fine cocktail lounge in the hotel downtown, a "tavern" where food is served and unescorted women don't feel uncomfortable, a roadhouse where couples might head on a Saturday night, and a bunch of dank, dark places down by the docks that are well known to the Shore Patrol.

That is actually a pretty good mix there. I could see having many choices.

It could well look like that except for the weeds in the railroad yard and all the modern cars.

Running boards

No! No! 1940 Buicks were the first production car (if I'm not mistaken) made without running boards. I have to have my 1941 Buick, or I'm taking my ball and bat and leaving. And so will Mr H, over in Ireland, who already has a gorgeus 41 Buick.

Oh, and a feed store???
That's where we use to stand around the pot belly stove and keep warm during the winter....'course, we would have been warm if we stayed in school, but we learned lots more at the feed store, I'm sure...there was always a pot pf coffee keeping warm...it was some potent stuff

Mmmm...I use to make my rebellious children go out and cut a switch from the peach trees in the orchard, but if we had a cane supplier...?

There are a fair number of 1950s-vintage locomotives running around on Michigan short lines.

True, Dave, but most of your survivors are usually 2K-hp-and-below roadswitchers that can be downgraded to emphasize the "switching" part of their duties. Bigger road-units, usually after about 15-20 years (the length of their equipment-trusts) get traded in to GE or EMD on newer power. (Well, aside from CSX, who gutted a lot of their -30s to use as road-slugs...)

Old GP7's/-9's (the older engine in the foreground), no surprise--they make great switch engines, and are 250hp more than an SW1500 or MP15 for significantly cheaper.

Just how big is this city supposed to be anyway? I’ve been thinking along the lines of Pre-War Saginaw.

Diamondback: Interesting! I love railroad stuff. You mentioned a family connection to the NYC, do you still have a hand in? Maybe you should be running the Depot in our little town.

Dave, last of the line was my great-grandfather--aside from my involvement as a historian, I'm just an observer from afar.

Besides, I have a full plate with the firearms-related and gadgeteering fields as it is... unless part of the depot could be turned into a kind of "Q's Lab" for my covert R&D activities.

I'd say that as station master, what you do with that unused freighthouse along the team track is up to you.

$85,000. about $3.00/sq. ft., and the building has a good electric service and a relatively new rubber roof.

The power plant from the old flouring mill is also for sale. 10,209 square feet for $32,000. The water turbines and alternators have, alas, been removed.
