Very interesting. A crippling penance, which only served to fuel another conflict. Be careful how hard you spank....

And the German people almost a century later are still burdened with this? When is enough, enough?

Best,

Wow.

Well, it is what it is... Still a shocking number of lives lost, even 100 years later.

Richard J. Evans' book, 'The Coming of the Third Reich' and Charles Bracelen Flood's "Hitler: The Path to Power" both essay how these reparations caused the German economy to tank, justified the French occupation of the Ruhr and therefore helped strangle the Weimar Republic in its cradle. These resentments, as this brief UK Telegraph article says, gave AH powerful arguments that his listeners wanted to hear.
The emotions of the times make the reparations understandable but oh, what unforseeable consequences. The money was certainly not worth it.

Okay, I’ll be the devil’s advocate here: Germany made reparations the problem, not France or Great Britain. Right-wing elements in Weimar deliberately caused hyper-inflation in the ‘20s to make it easier to pay down that debt in de-valued Reichmarks; hurting the people, building resentment against the Allies, and setting the stage for the Nazi takeover.

Geesie: good quote about revenge!

David: it wouldn't surprise me if it were a little of both sides. Ok a lot of both sides of the debate.

Of course, for Clemenceau and the French it was never about reparation per se, but simple revenge and the desire to see Germany humiliated. Understandable, certainly, if unwise.
