I think you’re probably right, but “dressing up” meant something to a higher standard than it does today. A business suit (especially one made in the ‘20s) is far more comfortable when compared with formalwear. And I’m sure George Babbitt would never have dreamed of leaving the house in his...
Well the Florsheims being replaced weren't exactly vintage. I got them new in high school. The pair of shoes I got as a replacement were of far higher quality. So, with that in mind, maybe Stacy Adams would have been an adequate replacement for the '90s Florsheims.

It's probably too late, but have you considered just reupholstering the one in a complimentary color that is distinct from the originals? My parents' dining-room set has four matching chairs, but one has arms. The chair with arms goes at the head of the table.
I'm thinking you could go for...
That's what I was going to say. My grandfather (the guy in my avatar) wore a Bulova-made A-11 during the War. Soemtime between then and now he acquired a nice old Helios that looks perhaps a bit more piloty to modern eyes. If you search my old posts, you'll see some really bad pictures of it...
I just encountered this disapproval in the novel Babbitt. The title character refers to his evening clothes as a tuxedo, and his wife rebukes him for it.

I just discovered another Silver Lake dune scooter:
In approximately this same era, up at the Sleeping Bear dunes, they used new '57 Oldsmobile convertibles with oversized tires!

I finally did find a plate with a model and serial number on it. It was in one of the warming drawers right in plain sight, and I'm not sure why I missed it before.
The model number is "W 6428 X" and the serial number is "450933". I'm not sure what any of that means (the SN leads me to...
In nearby Saginaw there is a fellow who rescues and restores vintage neon signs. They just recently re-erected a giant dripping faucet from a defunct plumbing supply store. It joined a restored apartment store sign in a city parking lot downtown that is becoming a quasi-official neon-sign...
My dad said that when he started college they tried to make him wear a beanie, and that was in the sixties! I thought that trend had been killed off by the G.I. Bill. Can you imagine telling some guy who had stormed Omaha beach carrying a B.A.R. that since he was a freshman, he had to wear a...
My dad had a pretty decent HO-scale layout in the basement before I turned 9. He, my brother, and I tried to build another after we moved, but didn’t get beyond roughed-in scenery. It wasn’t much fun at the new house because of the low ceilings and frequent flooding in the basement.
I’ve...
The two activities that come to mind for me are camping and model railroading. I haven’t done either in quite a while, though, because the girls are too young yet (likely model railroading is on permanent hiatus, unless the baby turns out to be fascinated by trains).
Hauling home cheap/free...
I speculate that a big reason for many couples to have both partners working is increased credit worthiness. It's far easier to live beyond your means when both spouses are employed.

Think of it as greater incentive to ride the trolley. :)
I'm a big believer in streetcars. The tracks provide a psychological connection to public transport that bus lines can never approach.

I'm not sure one of these ever went on Safari, but I always thought they looked the part:
This one just came up on Craigslist near me, for only $1500, and it's already got the same-series engine swapped in as my DD Ford Falcon, so fleet maintenance would be easier. It's almost painful...
