Help me replace my dying Florsheims?

Ooh, the Florsheim Imperial wingtips are a great looking shoe. I'm going to try and nab a pair in size 11. I remember seeing a few in thrift stores years ago. They were built like tanks! -Dave

Help me replace my dying Florsheims?

Well, my trusty (Indian-made, 1990s-vintage) Florsheim cap-toe oxfords have finally let me down. The leather facade on the top is starting to flake away, revealing the structural material below. What’s sad is that they haven’t got many miles on them - the soles have never even been replaced...

Everyday Fellows of the Golden Era?

My great-great grandfather (William, on the right) and his brother (David, with the badge): David died in 1926, so this was taken sometime before then: -Dave

    The Adventurer's Gear Thread

I just returned from getting a (long-overdue) haircut. While chatting, my barber revealed that she is in the process of becoming a Stormy Kromer retailer. I have been wanting to buy a Kromer hat for a while, and excitedly placed my order for a charcoal model in size 7 1/2. She showed me...

    Hats or Shades

What he said. Hat and sunglasses together is the perfect combination for sun blockage. I personally don't think it looks bad, but even if it does, how big a fop do you have to be to want to be blinded for the sake of fashion? -Dave

Help! How to remove a coffee stain from my treasured Buzz Rickson B-15 ?

Black coffee stains are essentially oil stains. I suggest naphtha (lighter fluid). I've had great luck getting mayonnaise out of neckties, hair oil out of felt hats, and the like with it. I’d try it in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it doesn’t take the dye out of the jacket or...

Vintage professions you'd like to see come back.....

Bootleggers are still around, it's just that DVDs and marijuana aren't as romantic as booze. I would definitely love to see a comeback of brave men in cloth-covered biplanes touring the countryside. Oh, and isn't it "gumshoe" as in shoes with gum soles for quiet walking? -Dave

Vintage professions you'd like to see come back.....

You should meet my wife. She is perennially frustrated by the question "Do you work?". With two kids under age four and a 120-year-old household, you bet she works. -Dave

Vintage professions you'd like to see come back.....

Here in the Tri-Cities of Michigan, we have two horologists and a talented neon-sign repairman. What I would like to see around here is a small, high-quality grocer and butcher downtown. -Dave

Wouldn't Tesla-punk run on free electricity broadcast through the air? -Dave

Here's what I want for Christmas - Steampunk electric car.

You mean, if they can build it to satisfy the insurance industry... er, I mean, government safety standards. Put a tall, two- or four-passenger coupe body on the vehicle in the original post and you'd have something highly reminiscent of the Detroit Electric my wife and I had the pleasure to...

I just got this one over the weekend. This is my grandfather's senior picture. He graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1933. -Dave

Everyday Fellows of the Golden Era?

I lost track of this thread after the transition, but I'm glad I found it again. I'll try to revive it: My great aunt and her husband-to-be during WWII. Another great aunt and her husband in 1936. My great grandfather and my twin great aunts in 1930. My great grandfather...

    Reproduction classic workwear

I actually have a nice set of herringbone coveralls that I like for exactly that reason, but there are days that I don't want to be wearing an extra layer, so I end up just wearing work pants and a work shirt, but some days I just don't want to wear pants (especially without a belt). -Dave

favorite cars of the golden era

I drive a Ford Falcon. It was the closest I could get to a Golden Era car in my price range and still justify. I’d have loved something from the ‘46 to ‘54 period especially, but the V8 Fords were too expensive, and it’s too hard to get spare parts for the rest. -Dave

    Reproduction classic workwear

Pointer Brand was another label that was mentioned in one of the two “Classic Workwear” threads as being classically styled, American made, and affordable enough to actually work in. I found a Round House retailer locally, and hope to check it out soon. I really want a set of overalls for...
