When I called them, they pretty much said to order the 44...so, I ordered a 42 and a 44. In the end, we kept the 42. Just wondering if a 40 would have fit??? I think it would have been perfect.
Check out my post on the Cockpit USA Goatskin A-2 Review. Lots of photos, and dimensions plus a bonus...
At least in my case, this jacket is not blousy at all. There is just a little bit of slack in the lower back region if not zipped up fully, but I have that on every A-2 that has been tried on.
Off topic, but just got back from Sun 'n Fun in Florida. We are building a replica P-51D Mustang. So most anything that flew in WWII is of interest. I started my career flying DC-3's out of DFW...
Note the G&B size 42R is actually a bit smaller in some areas than my Cockpit USA size 40R.
Here...
I look at jackets like underwear...don't want my boys goin' where your boys have been. That is why I would only buy something as personal as an A-2 newly manufactured. Sometimes there are new ones on the Bay. Just a personal problem with me, I guess.
Photos here actually will tell you nothing as we are all built a little different. You simply have to try the jacket on, see for yourself. I would have G&B send 2 jackets in 2 sizes...try them both, keep the one that fits best. That is what I did.
Here is a photo of my G&B A-2 (cow hide) with...
I have the civil in a size 42R. I can wear a 40, or 42 without problem. I'm 5' 11", 174 lbs, size 33 jeans. My friend ordered his A-2 from them one size smaller than his normal coat size, and it is a perfect fit. Wish I would have ordered mine in a 40, although thru the shoulder my 42 is...
At $175 with shipping, a definite bargain. Don't forget Leather Coats Etc. (www.leathercoatsetc.com). Their A-2 is $279, made in the USA. And the San Diego Leather Company (www.leather.com). Their A-2 is $245, made right their in San Diego. Very good customer service from these people too.
And...
Not being a military guy, I can only repeat what has been read on some other forums and blogs...that is many of the "civilian" mods to issue A-2's were brought about by the personnel doing their own mods in the field. Adding pockets, extra panels, etc., so the manufacturers have incorporated...
No, lets get our local resident "brain surgeon" self proclaimed experts to take the test. And you know who you are!!! I'll buy the first round of beer as this will be highly entertaining and good for laughs. And in the end, we'll all get an education.
Plus, lets add in one or two average...
As far as a more "generous" fit, I'll state that this jacket is not sloppy in the fit department at all. A good fit around the abdomen and waist area...I wear size 33 jeans. Perhaps this panel is the cost issue, and some manufacturers state that goat skins are smaller in size, therefore more...
Something else to consider. As the WWII jackets were mass produced, it would be inevitable that some minor variations might exist from example to example. I would not get wrapped around the axle over stitch count, thread count, etc. If it fits, looks good, and is reasonably well made...plus is...
Yes, way better than many more expensive examples...in fact, way better than most. But I can only go by the photos here.
Everyone knows my feelings on G&B. Two good friends of mine bought A-2's and B-3's on my recommendation. Now all three of us feel that G&B is the brand to beat.
Lets throw...
