You're lucky you live in San Francisco and can go in person. I made a special trip to SF for my first JL and I just received my second that was done via emails and phone. It's amazing how he can send you a test jacket, you email him pix wearing it, he says two inches here and one inch there...
I think it's great. I think Alan and JL are great. The only thing I think I would have done differently is go with a two-way zipper. I know it doesn't look as "classic" as a regular zipper, but I think it would make the jacket easier to wear if you were sitting down (in a car or on a bike)...
In a few days I'll be getting not an A2 but definitely a "bomber jacket." I went for inside pockets on each side (wallet and cell phone). If Alan from Johnson Leather thought it was a bad idea, he'd have said so (and I'd have moved to Plan B).
You know how sizes are. Sometimes I wear a 40 and sometimes a 42. Anyway. I bought a 40 GB Civil A2 on ebay. It came with a zip out full thinsulate lining. I'd expected to wear the jacket without the liner; but without it, the jacket was way too big. It fit nicely though when I did have the...
I feel your pain. My M200 from Johnson Leather has only one inside pocket and it's on the right side only because I remembered to request it that way. I've had plenty of suits and sport coats and the default inside pocket placement is to the left. I'm glad I remembered to request a right...
I'll chime in that I never felt the inside hardware behind the neck when the collar was detached. I just went with the permanent because I wanted a really warm, non-armored jacket for my bike. With me, the snaps are more of a mental thing (NO WISE CRACKS PLEASE)
I once had a jacket with a detachable collar and didn't like all the snaps involved, especially when the collar is off. Of course I'm being perfectionistic, but I prefer minimalism and classic. I'm getting a warm bomber (for colder riding) from JL at the end of this month (per Alan) and I went...
I too am expecting a JL in the same CXL , hopefully in the next few days. I can't see anyone buying a "stock" JL unless they walk out of the store with something pre-made. Otherwise you have choices and little separation from the maker so customizations seem inevitable. Mine is a variant of...
I think it's too short too. To me the giveaway is how high the half belt is. I think that theoretically the belt in back matches up with where the belt would be if you were wearing a trench coat. And a lot of old jackets had buttons on the side where you attached two belts that buckled in...
shag
verb [ trans. ] Baseball
chase or catch (fly balls) for practice.
ORIGIN early 20th cent.: of unknown origin.
I forget you guys on the other side of the pond speak a (slightly) different language. I really think any "red-blooded American boy" would know what I meant "right off the bat."
Anyhow I shagged a really nice Lost Worlds A1 for a great price on ebay a little while ago, but the jacket squeaked terribly. I posted here looking for answers, thinking that the "heavy heads" on this board would have some sage advice. No soap. Even such authorities as H.D. said they sold...
You have excellent taste. BTW I'm waiting on a jacket from JL in the same hide myself. I envy you because you could go in for a fitting. That's what I did with my first JL, an M200. This time I couldn't get to SF so I went the "test jacket" route. I'm a leetle worried that it won't be spot...
Why employ someone to document how their quality has really gone way down. From A2's that were a certain size to Small, Medium, and Large. And those sizes are very generous so the fit is very much hit or miss.
Once again I'll stick my two cents (which used to be real money) worth in. I'd rather switch than fight. I have a great, well armored, roomy enough for two layers underneath, vented enough for if it gets warmer, Vanson Teton. But sometimes when I'm riding to a gay, bright, sophisticated lunch...
When I saw the centimeters I thought you'd be from Europe. If you're trying to be informative, I think inches would be better. Unless you use metrics all the time, they don't mean much (why do I feel like I'm in 1976?). Meanwhile, I like the Luftwaffe jackets but am put off by the Nazified...
I have a size 40 G and B Civil A2 that I got on ebay. It's a nice jacket but if I had to say one thing about it, I'd say that it runs LAARGE. Sometimes I take a 40 and sometimes a 42. Anyway this jacket came with a zip-out thinsulate liner which I thought I might use sometimes, but really...
