I (and probably a lot of you guys) just got an email form Aero announcing a big "hidden treasure" sale wherein they're selling jackets at "giveaway prices" which are "just above cost." I don't know whether to be excited about and maybe prepare for this or not. Can anyone who's more familiar...
I had a jacket made with that hide at JL. Before I proceeded, I spoke with Alan and he reported that he's just seen a jacket he'd built previously and there weren't any color issues appertaining to the overdye. You almost have to make a special effort to rub off the overdye to see a different...
I was just about to make the exact same point. People with steer somehow didn't notice it wasn't horsehide until they were told about the switcheroo. There's a message in there somewhere.
A similar price jump happened to air-cooled Volkswagens. There's a website www.oldbug.com that used to sell it's reconditioned cars for 15 to $30,000. Now they are closer to 50 or 100,000 or more. Same cars.
I can't believe I stumbled across something totally new and helpful. The thought that I discovered something that even total heavy heads like Peacoat and Butte didn't know about is a mindblower. it's like in the play "The Starwagon," (Maxwell Anderson 1937) where a genius inventor is inspired...
I bought a nice jacket from Johnson Leathers that I posted about previously. When I posted a pic, someone said it would be better all around when the leather "relaxed." It hasn't been that cold lately, so I didn't have that many occasions to wear it and the leather (CXL cow) never *did* relax...
I just got off the phone to Alan. It turns out he was lurking FL and emailed me! How's that for service? He said he had a number of colors to offer in a quarter inch shearling. He's sending me samples. I hate paying the freight; but you gotta do what you gotta do. At least it's cheaper...
Thanks to everyone. I needed info and I got info, so I feel better going forward. I'll call Alan at JL about this. If the collar has to be replaced anyway, maybe it makes sense to try the water treatment first. I'll discuss it with him. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW ALAN IS DOING THESE DAYS? ONCE...
I had a jacket made at Johnson Leathers (which I posted about previously). I asked for a mouton collar and I got one. Long story short: It's a warm jacket and I want to wear it a lot more now that it's colder (for Santa Monica anyway). I sorta don't like the way the collar turned out. It's too...
+1 on don't get them. I once had an authentic L.A. motorcycle officers' jacket with zips and I didn't like them. It's just unpleasant to have the zipper rake your hand and wrist every time you use them. And when it's cold, the zips get verrrry cold, which defeats the whole purpose of using a...
My first good (motorcycle) jacket was a Vanson Teton and it's still my most practical jacket for riding. It's my warmest with sufficient room for layering and the long back really works against the chill. it's also my coolest (leather) jacket with effective venting up the ying-yang. I also...
I'm not a shill, I just think Johnson Leathers is the greatest. The best way to solve your dilemma IMHO would be to call JL and speak to Alan. What will probably happen is he'll UPS a similar stock jacket to you. Then you try it on and take pictures wearing it, email them, and call JL and...
You're right, I'm wrong. When I heard the town mentioned, I wanted to post about it right then. I really went off half-cocked this time. When I stop to to think about it, I do remember that it took place in northern England. The good news is that once again I learned something on FL ;-)
It's the second jacket I've bought from Johnson Leathers. If you're interested in the back story, check out the message I posted when it was delivered:

There's a TV series I watched in the late '70s that took place in and around Galashiels circa 1920. I knew there had to be more than one series because the last episode was a cliffhanger. I was never able to locate it on video. But now it looks like the entire series on YouTube. It's not a...
I think this proves that I'm not *always* 100% all talk. When I say I like dark brown with rust knits, I ain't just whistling Dixie!
P.S. What you're going through is called frisson.
I don't know that it suits you needs; but maybe a Vanson Sturges (with armor). It's made for riding with forward-bending arms etc, but you could wear it without armor also. I won't say it's a work of art like an Aero. You can see from the pictures that it's made out of many pieces sown...
I really go for the seal brown , nickel hardware, and rust knits. We both have excellent taste. Meanwhile, happiness is having something to look forward to. I celebrate your obviously excellent karma. Another nice thing is you look kind of young in your avatar so you'll have a whole lifetime...
Check out Johnson Leather in San Francisco. They can put any kind of zipper in any jacket, do all the fitting etc. via phone/email images, and the quality is first rate. If JL is a possibility for you, use the search function above for testimonials.
P.S. Don't go by their website. They told...
