All the re-enactors I know also like vintage. They don't just "turn it on" at events and then "turn it off" when they come home. Vintage is a part of all of their lives -- a huge part. I don't understand how it could be anything else.
As for me, I don't do re-enacting. I am just me, but I...
Haha. That's a 1944 "after school" look, but I went to high school in the early 1990s and that was the typical "to school" look! She'd have fit in with the grunge gals lol They wore used men's jeans and the flannel coats/tops. Looked just like this gal, sans the smile! Weren't so "edgy"...
I asked my dad if girls were pants when he was in high school (c/o '59) and he said, half-joking, "Never, it was illegal!" My mom (c/o '70) told me that the ban on girls' wearing pants to school was lifted in her senior year.
I used to have a pattern picture saved of a maxi-dress from the 1930s. It was DEF a 1930s pattern, but it was drawn like it came from the 70s -- much like that skirt. I think it may have been drawn with paisleys on it. It was a time traveller pattern.
I like finding crazy/ugly/weird stuff from back in the day. It breaks stereotypes that everything was brown and "gracious." lol
No need to apologize for anything. :D You can't really tell if someone is joking or not on the Internet and I don't want anyone to feel hurt or offended just...
I think women's jeans from back in the day are ugly. Such a horrible cut and my dad said that jeans back then were so stiff they stood up on their own lol These look really thick, stiff, unflattering, and uncomfortable.
lol
I don't have a problem with disagreeing -- I was just a bit put off by the comments where people were taking it personally. "I must have bad taste then!" is not becoming. lol It's not like we're posting any of these as a personal attack to anyone!! lol As LD said -- some I think are...
Just took a look at the book -- soft rollers or "pillow rollers."
I see them all the time in CVS around here. I almost bought a set, but decided to make my own instead. It didn't work out good for me lol
NEW BATCH OF UGLY:
From 1937. Not sure if it's ugly, but certainly unusual.
The rest are from 1946:
There was a bedazzling craze in '46. lol WITHOUT the studs this would be awesome. WITH the studs it just looks "old lady."
Looks either unfinished, Robin Hood-y, or like an...
Ancestry.com hosts every single Sears catalog from 1896 until 1993 and I am learning more about fashion from looking at them then I ever have from all my books combined that I've collected since 1998 (when I got into vintage bigtime.)
Looking at the catalogs in chronological order is like...
The first t-shirt-style shirts for women appeared in the Sears catalog in 1944 as "Polo Shirts":
They appear to mostly be paired with slacks:
Or playsuits/shorts:
Here are some t-shirts in a 1947 catalog, still called a "Polo Shirt" and to be worn with Top Skirts, Pedal...
I am not a nurse, but I am obsessed with "uniform" dresses from the 30s and 40s and prefer them to "regular" dresses. I have a lot of images from catalogs I can post, but no time right now. I did make myself a dress from 1930s nurse's uniform and it's one of my favourites to wear:
