From 1916:
lol
LOVE the one with reeds growing out of it (upper left) and the "Venus Fly Trap" under it. And who can resist the "Cactus" number at bottom? I wouldn't wear them, but I am in awe of their obnoxious beauty.
Here's some more Victorian-influenced dresses I found from 48-49...
Especially the dress on the left with the bustle-style back!
Especially the red checked one at top.
Sorry gals, but.....
I think these post-war "blousettes" are the ugliest things ever created. I know rationing was still an issue and I'm sure the design had something to do with that, but I just see a pillowcase with holes cut out for the head and the arms and then belted at the waist...
I agree with this. I saw clips of it when it first came out (I was a kid) and it scared the daylights out of me! In 1991 we watched it in school and it wasn't so scary. I'd like to see it now, though....
Stupid lawsuit. Next, we'll all be sued for mentioning Bette Davis' name on this forum. And then we'll be sued for telling a friend about a good Bette Davis film we saw on TCM, thus giving her publicity and promotion that was not authorized!
I know, I'm on the slipperly slope fallacy here...
Even though I also posted this in *another* (cough) thread, I would say some of these 1948 dresses have a Victorian influence...
Also, Victorian revival in 1935:
lol I have a feeling her mom made her wear this dress because she was getting her yearbook picture taken that day!
lol
I'll admit, I'm not too sure about any dress on this page (from 1948). The best one is the navy blue one. The pink stripey one would be alright if the sleeves and neckline/neck ruffle weren't so hideous.
I almost posted a similar thing a few days ago when the "I must have bad taste, then!" comments were directed at what *I* thought was ugly. As you said -- just a fun thread and I can totally see why some things here would be "ugly" to someone!! Too bad some felt the need to take it personal...
