My latest acquisition - it's a rare one It's a slide-action Remington model 14 1/2 carbine in 38 wcf caliber made in 1914. A competitor for Winchester model 92 that never really caught on. Latest guess is they only made 1000-2000 of these over a 15 year period - extremely rare - and a...

up196, Beautiful little DS you have there - is it marked "Detective Special" or just "38 Special?" The reason that I ask is that I have two pre-detective specials from the mid to late 1920s that were built before Colt used DS as a model name that look identical to the very early DSs that...

Indycop, I LOVE the M1 rifle - what a machine! You can see why GIs in WWII and Korea thought so highly of it. My dad's only complaint was the weight of the rifle but he only weighed 145 lbs so a 10 lb rifle plus the rest of his gear was cumbersome. He was a glider rider with the 325th GIR...

Deacon, Even the broomie clips won't work if the spring isn't taut enough. I've never tried M16 clips. Supposedly, Beretta SMG clips will work in a broom and look almost identical to the broom clips. The difference is that the spring is fire-blued in the Beretta clips. John

Deacon, That's a heck-of-a find. What are the headstamps on the ammo and are the clips marked? Here are some of mine: John

Having shot both, I prefer the 30 Mauser broomie for shooting and the 30 luger Luger for loading. It is engraved and in 7.63 caliber, might have been finished in sliver plate at one time, and the antler grips had to have been custom made. I've had several "experts" look at it and the...

shortbow, I love the luger holster - softest leather that you can imagine. I just wish I knew who made it. Deacon, I had the following made for me by Old West Reproductions a couple of years ago for (I think but don't quote me) about $275 - holster, two pouches and a belt. Rick is a...

shortbow, I like your idea that it might be a military holster except that it is very ornately carved. I don't remember any military holsters that were anything but plain-jane. The photos of the back of the flap, back of the holster and front of the flap. Happy Holidays...

This isn't a Swiss Luger but a commercial Model 1900. The Swiss Lugers look pretty much like these - both have the early toggle - I think the Swiss models had a different grip and had the Swiss cross on top of the receiver? Happy Holidays! John

I wish it was that easy - the Heiser catalog that I looked at has nothing like this holster. Most of the big Holster makers - Heiser, Lawrence, etc. had cartouches they stamped in their holsters. Although Heiser reportedly made holsters for companies like Abercrombie & Fitch and did not put...

Deacon, The only marks on it are "MMOTT" The only saddlery/leather shop that I can find named Mott is located in Mott, North Dakota but I can't find anything else about them. Mott, ND was established in 1903 so the town is in the right era. Unfortunately, Mott is a popular name in the...

Steve, I like Lugers too, although I'm partial to the 1900 models. Quite a complex piece of machinery for that time period. John

Ragnar, Wow! What a nice collection - I especially like the two StG 44s. Something you don't see everyday. If I had the money they would be on top of my wish list, even before a decent WWII Thompson M1A1. Thanks for sharing. John

    Show us your Guns!

Matt, You could always go for a Reising Model 50 SMG about 1/3 the cost of a Thompson ($4-4.5K)- fires the 45 acp cartridge and has WWII history (much maligned - not all of it deserved) with the USMC in the Pacific Theater (until 1943) and then with law enforcement after that. On full auto...

Quite frankly, I prefer the look and simply lines of the Argentine. The Para might be easier to shoot right off the bat but the older one will do the job with only a little more practice. I know, I know - spoken like a true "young fogey." John

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I won this one on ebay - it has some wear to the liner and the sweat but no stains, moth bites, etc. to the felt. Considering the prices that the larger size pristine JohnnyPhi Adam Executives were bringing in the merchants section here I don't think I did too bad for one at roughly 1/2 the...

    Lauren Bacall is 84 today!

I'm two months late but Happy Birthday to Ms. Bacall. Her performance at the ripe old age of 19 in "To Have and Have Not" in 1944 is the reason my daughter was named Lauren in 1986. Ms. Bacall was something in that movie! John
