I wish that guy on At The Front still had his rants about customers not following his cleaning instructions and then blaming him. Never, ever wash wool clothing in a washing machine. Hand-wash it in a bathtub, with lukewarm water and a soft soap.
How very interesting... it doesn't look military at all, unlike the old greatcoats which even with civilian buttons could never pass for civilian wear. Of course with the introduction of insulated clothing in the 1990s greatcoats are not longer "field" clothing. If I were you, I'd remove the top...
Oh right, now I see what you mean by the original toggling config. Yeah, it makes sense to return it to that, if you can, so it can be buttoned either way.
I guess car coats is another term, like blazers, the definition of which has expanded? The term used to mean short overcoats or raincoats that fell short of the knee. They were very common in the 1960s and 1970s and were intended for men who spent most of their travel/commute time in cars.
Don't change it! Keep it original (please) since it's clearly vintage and clearly high quality. Not that I've made a study of this, but this is the best quality non-military duffle I've ever seen in photos. If it fits you just wear it and enjoy it. Nobody will notice the buttoning to the other side.
^ That's a really great looking vintage duffle coat. The cloth is a traditional wool weave (you can see where the nap has worn off) and the use of ropes and wooden toggles is pleasing to the eye (less commonly seen today). It appears to be a woman's coat, given that it "buttons" to the left side.
Couple years back I was keen on a late-period 1980s Alpha military one, but yeah, they kept measuring 24" or shorter in the torso, which would barely cover my belly button! Civilian ones are more accomodating, that's for sure.
Below is me wearing an Alpha civilian USA-made N2B getting ready to clear the driveway of 10 inches of snow the other day. I used to roll my eyes at N2B jackets, since for several years a while back every teenager wore one, but nobody wears them anymore and having worn this jacket several times...
Actually, if you're tall and skinny, then adding a bit of bulk to your upper body would probably be an improvement. So a bulky flight jacket, for instance, would improve the "masculinity" of your figure (since ideally men are supposed to have larger upper bodies while women have larger hips). If...
I have no idea the age of it, but as I said the number of buttons matters and strongly suggests wartime. The cuffs were used on DDR coats for several years after the war, but at some point both DDR and GDR coats had no cuffs. Good luck finding photos but I doubt you'll find anything definitive...
To my fellow southern Ontario residents, I hope you head home from work early today, or simply stay home. The roads are clear right now but they won't be later. We've got a big nasty snowstorm coming, apparently. I just got back from my walk and my parka was encrusted with an icy snow.
