depends on the shape of your skull.
you just push the crease lower with your thumb or finger, it's not rocket science. Sure it takes practice to get clean, even lines, but there really is no mystery about it. Start with the center crease....I eyeball and do a soft 'karate chop' with my hand...
Well, the last pic confirmed my suspicions, 60's. 3x is a well regarded felt quality that fell near the middle of Stetson's pricing at the time. I don't know that we specifically have seen an ad for your iteration, but both links have Stetsonian ads, so you can see where yours fits in the...
Well, you're going to need to post more pics. The Stetsonian was offered in varying configurations from early on in the century continuing through to the modern day.

There is no "formula" per se for starting height and ending height. Only crown heights that are more standard than others. 5 1/2" was fairly common for open crown dress hats.
If you're looking for a lower profile, you can ask for something like a 5" open crown, but most of us here prefer a bit...
Thanks, gents. The brim did want to go back into that curl fro m the more Hollywood brim of the auction photos, but the off-center dip remains. Very friendly proportions on this one.
The Junior Cowboy arrived.
Interesting hat. The weight and hand of the felt actually remind me very much of Hatco's current Royal Deluxe (which is to say, feels kinda like my premier Strat). This hat takes a dry crease quite easily (moreso than the modern, for sure) but there is a tiny bit of...
So here's a picture of that Cavalry hat I picked up.
The current catalog says the crown height on the Cavalry is 4 1/4" but this one is closer to 4" (the to 'valley' of the front crease, not the maximal height), 3" brim. Anyway, posting because I'm pretty sure this is the same pre-creased...
Only that I think it's a cool modern take on the western hat and I've talked myself down from the ledge twice (like, I went as far as "add to cart") on the black one. I suspect the felt would be firmer than their average dress weights, but royal deluxe is the same grade as the premier strats.
Here are some visuals that may be generally useful:
This first hat is the binding on my modern Premier Stratoliner. For a modern hat, I've seen worse, but it's not the cleanest joining.
Top side is cleaner, but stupid poly thread sticking out:
Here's a vintage royal Stetson Deluxe Supper Club...
Before I make some sweeping generalities, they must be prefaced by stating that such generalities are limited in their usefulness when we are talking about the desirable stock of vintage hats (say from the 60's and older). There are so many variables with regards to felt weight and quality. Some...
Yah, vintage availability is definitely why I never filled up with Akubras. But as far as rain, I'm mostly just wearing modern westerns. I've found my BSHW shrugs off rain admirably as well. My hatco Boss Raw Edge was made with deadstock felt, so I'm pretty sure it won't shrink, and if it does...
I've been waffling on whether or not the following is really relevant here, but at least personally, it ties into my feelings on vintage hats.
The fuller backstory for the hat above:
The Golden Rule was a chain of stores in Wyoming which is where J.C. Penney got his start. He eventually...
I like their stuff, but they are pricey. We have members here who have reported good quality and service though. That Marfa Kumo straw is calling out to me, even though we're headed to the wrong season for straws.
I'd be remiss if I didn't also point out cheaper alternatives like Hatwrks in...
Hype.
See: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/westbrook-maker-nick-fouquet-hats-warning-image-heavy.73967/page-5#post-1853154
the TL/DR version: dude is just the face of a brand selling overpriced hats with a bohemian twist.
If you have Fouquet cash, you're better served by Optimo, Worth...
Of course, but I need the space and I'm putting my money where my mouth is with Akubras and divesting myself. I dont 'need' it as a bad weather hat, so I don't really need it at all.
