Western, anyone?

As a sidenote just for sake of conversation. There were a lot of us that didn't wear gaudy hats back in the 70's. Least in the early 70's. Most of us high school boys wore what we could afford. And most of us wore the old American Hat Co felts. Most popular crease with our old HS rodeo club crowd (central Texas) was the old Bull Rider. No trim, no fancy feathers, just a felt hat.
I bought my felt at the old Joske's dept store. This was when they even sold tack and such. Seems things went all haywire after that Urban Cowboy movie. I remember the basic price of $40 for a decent pair of Tony Llamas went sky high after that! LOL! Felts too!!!
Just some stuff I remember from back in the day.

Joao, I understand now, and I do get it. I have a couple of 1970's westerns that I just don't have the heart to change up because as gaudy as they are, they are very representative of the time.

I don't have the heavy feather-adorned model (think Richard Petty), but that would be another example.

I don't like feathers on hats. Hats that arrived to me with added feathers/feather hatband lost them (My Stagecoach HI-HO come with a feather hatband but luckly the owner kept the original ribbon inside the box so, I removed the feathers and restored the original ribbon). But I do have some hats with feathers because it's how they were.

Still, a guy's got to work with what he's got. In years gone by it was quite common to update & renovate your hats as styles changed - much more so than now, I venture.

I accept that on a used hat. That is not a used hat, it's a NOS hat!!
But anyway, Terry already broke my heart and I do not worry about his hats anymore.

I think I would had loved to have lived those times. A lot of things are lost in today modern days.

Joao, here's that Beaver 100. I don't think it will have enough brim for you. It's 3.5 with the curl included and is only a 7 1/8, so would lose maybe 1/4 inch. It's a nice soft felt, but does have some light moth tracking. I think I'll put a different band on it and keep it.

I also understood he is not going to trim the brim but still I think this hat is kind of collective and by removing the binding and original ribbon it kinds of "destroys" it turning it to an "common" cordova color Stagecoach (more easy to find)
Look at this: I have 3 cordova Stagecoach hats, 1 is a Turkey Creek like the one Terry is going to modify and 2 are... normal hats (one of them you changed the ribbon). I have to check if my Dobbs West Stagecoach hat is also cordova.

If it's any consolation the hat's not going to be destroyed. The modifications I make to it will be minor, such as reblocking the hat and sewing on a different ribbon. The brim shape will remain the same and will not be cut. The brim binding and ribbon will be carefully removed and saved. If I ever decide to sell it or trade it off the original ribbon and binding will go with it. It should be a pretty easy fix for a talented hatter to put it back to original if that's what someone wanted. But, for now, I'm fixing it up to suit what I like.

You never told me about a Beaver 100. If it looses brim width than keep it or it will end like my Nutrias: mostly inside of a box.

When I said destroyed it, I meant visually, since you asked about the stitching holes being visible I understood you were not trimming the brim.
If you want my opinion, they will be as visible as a pin hole on a crown (well maybe less due to brim sight "direction").
I wouldn't do that, but your hat, your decision.

I dropped off an old Stetson Campaign hat and a black felt 5x both in need of attention. I remember I had Manny make me a silver belly back in '77. Cost was like $60 then!!

About the price back then (as you mentioned before the decent pair of Tony Llamas for $40):
When I got my first car, I would fill the tank with gasoline with 25 euros and still received change.
Now I have a diesel car and with 25 euros I can't fill half tank. Diesel in Portugal was (and is) cheaper than gasoline.

This one is a great hat. I'm tempted to put a campaign crease or a small front dent in it and wear it like a "sombrerito." It reminds me of the hats Cisco & Pancho wore in the Cisco Kid shows I watched as a child.

Here's one you guys might appreciate, an OR Stetson 7x clear beaver that was plainly a working cowboy's hat. I had pretty good success bringing a lesser quality Aussie (not an Akubra) back to life from a similar state, and look forward to the project.

Incidentally, this also looks an awful lot like a "before" photo of the Nutria Quality that I rebuilt for Terry.

I picked this up for next to nothing at about the time I finished that hat for him. Like TJ's hat, it has lived a hard life but has "good bones!"
