Next is a dark brown hat from Mallory's Burton -Taylor line. 2 1/2 inch brim. Nothing on sweatband except store where sold.

Finally, a Mallory that's about a beater, 2 1/4 inch brim, I'm guessing from the 1950's or so. Not sure why I got it, except maybe for the color. I also have a pre-Stetson Mallory bowler and post-Stetson Homburg, but this is enough for my first day as a member of the Forum.

Nice entrance and welcome to the Lounge. Those are some great examples.

This Mallory XV that 1mach1 bought in 2013 and posted about here in Apr 2014, he sold to me earlier this year, in Mar 2022. I just happened to run across his post about this hat while trying to find some similar hat with the same liner. Note this liner doesn't have the usual Mallory Established 1823 or 1817 date at the top of the crest. Instead, at bottom of crest it says Renowned Since 1823. If you look on page 43 of this thread, at top of page is a post-Stetson Mallory XV "The Dallas" which has a completely different liner than this Mallory here, but like this liner, at bottom of crest is Renowned Since 1817. This leads me to think or theorize that this second hat is an early post-Stetson Dallas, and that my first hat is either perhaps a precursor to "The Dallas" or possibly that it was sold as a Dallas but that maybe they hadn't started stamping that name on the sweatband yet. Since the Dallas was advertised or sold at least by 1942, I'm hesitant to try to push the date if my hat back before that.

Since I wrote the post last week about my possible Dallas precursor Mallory XV and discussed Mallory hat liners with the phrase "Renowned Since 1823" and "Renowned Since 1817" which I theorized were in the period right before and right after the Stetson takeover of Mallory, it just so happened that I've found another hat with this same phrase, a hat with the 1817 date. I just bought it online as a hat rescue project and received it today, unaware that I'd bought a hat with this phrase. The hat has no sweatband so that information is lost, but it's clearly not a Mallory Dallas, so we now know that the "Renowned Since" phrase wasn't limited just to Dallas model hats. This hat has a brim about 2 7/8 inches, the felt is fairly thick and very soft and pliable. Photos attached.

My understanding is that all Mallory hats made before Stetson bought them used the 1823 date and those after used the 1817 date. Probably some bleed over until existing stocks were used up.

Your project hat looks great. You got a lot of hat for $15 back then.

I understand about date difference before and after the Stetson takeover. What I'm particularly focusing on is the window of time when the phrase "Renowned Since" either 1823 or 1817, which seems to have only been used at the bottom of the liner crests just prior to and just after the takeover, as best I can judge, unless someone knows otherwise and can enlightened me.

I compared this new project hat to the 2nd hat I posted about, my Mallory Monster gangster fedora, which we know is in the transitional period of the Stetson takeover because it has an 1823 sweatband and 1817 liner. The project hat is only very slightly smaller. They could both be the same model. The overwelt brim edge is the same and the feel of the felt and thickness seem the same, so I think the project hat is also Pliafelt.

Mallory Fifteen in Pliafelt with some gorgeous shark's gills. The hat came up on a BIN for $50. I almost broke a finger... The felt is dress weight, very substantial. It took a dry crease well. The sweat is also quite nice, very good condition. Tags underneath are waiting for another application of Pecards and then a peek. The wider brim binding is nice. The only problem is a through and through moth chewing right in the middle of the crown. Battle scars. I'm hoping for some dating clues under the sweat, it just feels like the early 1950s. Mallory 1817 date in liner logo.

Another Mallory hat with the Renowned Since 1817 phrase.

I don’t see how on its own you can support the “Renowned” phrase only showing up on the transition hats. Maybe retailers could choose their desired liner like what was common with Borsalino? Have all the Renowned hats you’ve seen had the cloth size tag cut on an angle? Any paper size tag hats with the Renowned labeling?

I haven't looked at size tags yet, partly because I haven't found enough hats to make a population of hats to study. Just identified several more last night. Will take your advice to look at size tags, where they still exist.
