There are so many specialty hat groups but I didn't see one for Cavanagh, did I just miss it. Anyway here's some pictures of one of mine looking for some company:

This hat is a beige/taupe w/ a bit of green and 2-1/4" brim.
My other Cavanagh is in for C&B

Nice specimen! Brad Bowers is our Cavanagh expert here and though there have been many threads on the Cav I'm not aware of a "Cavanagh Club" thread.

Cavanagh Club works for me. I've thought about starting one, but never got around to it. Thanks for the kick off, rlk!:)

Just edit the thread title to "The Cavanagh Club," and we're off and running.

Splendid idea starting this thread!

Here is a 7 1/2 Cavanagh Derby in black. I will soon post some further pictures of the geek details for reference :)

I absolutely love yours, Bart! This is my favorite vintage hat. I own two other Cavanaghs but they are newer 60s stingy brims (1 7/8") with much heavier felt and thicker liners than this one. This one is black with a really cool 2" purple ribbon (the ribbon color doesn't photograph well). Open crown it's 5 1/2" and the brim is 2 3/8". The size tag is hard and brown and sort of matches the sweat band. It doesn't seem to be made of paper. I didn't photograph it because I had to remove it. This hat was labeled a 7 1/8 LO and I wear a 7 1/4 LO so I removed the tag and took some of the stitching out of the back of the sweat band so it would fit better.

Thanks Viper Man. Your Cav is wonderful also and looks to be in perfect condition. I really love the ribbon width and bows on our cavs.

It's no wonder I want every hat I see. That one is gorgeous, Bart, and so are the rest of these Cavs. Either you guys need to quit showing or I need to quit looking. :eusa_doh: :D

I feel the same way Bob, I blame you guys for the Open Road I have coming my way. But I think you need atleast one Cavanagh in the collection. They are a wonderful hat.

Oh, man, you're killing me...;)

That's definitely an early Cavanagh, one of the earliest I've seen. It's safe to say it's from the '30s, and I would lean to the early '30s, maybe even 1929, the first full year of Cavanagh operations. Everything fits the period, right down to the $20 price tag.

Fantastic.

Thank you for the dating, Brad! Certinly a millennium´s find to be worn with pride!

The way the silk ribbon is fixed to the brim edge is also quiet interesting. It is not entirely attached firmly to the felt, as to be seen in later and current bowlers. In fact, the silk is rather flapped over and loosely fixed with delecate stitches. This construction appears to ad on to keeping a certin elasticity and torsion resilience. Very elaborately done!

Any way to photograph this? I'm curious now. That sounds like an attention to detail for which Cavanagh is known, but I'm puzzled as to the reason.

It is hardly to catch properly with the camera. However, it gives an idea... . Reason for this could be the Cavabnagh Edge. It features diferent properties than a plain edge.

Thanks. Yes, that was my thinking, too. Somehow it probably has to do with the Cavanagh Edge. It might be to make it easier for someone to remove the ribbon if they wanted to show off the Edge, or it might have some functional purpose. One more thing for me to add to my list of research questions!
