Fantastic! I have the exact same hat, but in my size. Reddish brown (although not in the picture due to the fluorescent lights), with a 2" ribbon and a frayed bow.

I just reblocked mine and pushed a diamond into it. Gave it a new lease on life for me.

Again, congrats on your score. This is a great hat.

Sorry for the late reply (only saw this just now). Thanks! it is a great hat indeed. Now I only have to wait for the right weather to wear it!

Just snagged this Cavanagh off eBay. Seller listed it as 1940s maybe 30s. This is my first Cavanagh so don’t know much about dating them. I’ll go through this thread later today to do some research.

John Cavanagh Hats became Cavanagh Hats in 1950 so pretty safe to say 1940s or earlier. Very nice!

Good to know.

This one has the older address in the logo. That plus the "John" makes this a vintage showpiece!! Very impressive, should wear like a dream!

This proves the old saying “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.”

When this arrived and I put it on my head I heard stitches popping. Fortunately the sweatband is in good shape. It was just the single thread stitch attaching the sweatband to the hat. Basically it was rotten. So I left the sweatband in place and restitched with new thread. This was the first sweatband I've ever had to stitch. Leaving it in place made it much easier to align. I would say about 1/4 of the sweatband was hanging. I cleaned it up with a damp sponge and replaced the black pug with this light blue/white striped pug. BTW What I have found is that the address on the sweatband of "John Cavanagh, Ltd, 247 Park Avenue, New York" dates the hat to 1928-36. If that is correct this hat is between 82-88 years old.

Cavanagh homburg in "midnite". Listed as a homburg in black and was actually lowered twice in price before it dropped down to $25 I believe. Well, if you're gonna twist my arm...
It is in fact not black (but "midnite") but a very dark blue. It can be seen by the contrast between the black ribbon and the felt here. Size 56 with the brim at 5,5cm an the crown 10cm at the pinch. It's a later Cavanagh but the quality is still very much there. It has been worn, but been taken care of very well. Superb hand to the felt and the finishing is great. The smell lets me act out my capelolfactophilia fully:)

It is good to see a Cavanagh on European soil. Something to compete with all the Borsalinos!
