I recently made this cotton dress from a 1953 pattern. I knew I had to make it when I found the striped fabric (just like the illustration) on discount at a local fabric store. It was very easy--no alterations to the pattern and no fasteners. I added ties at the waist so that I wouldn't have to bother with a detachable belt.

And the pattern:

It's one of those fad mother-daughter patterns, and I made the "mother" version (#2).

Simplicity has issued a new reprint, just in time for the series premier of "Pan Am"! I'm really happy with the fit of the blouse. The only problem I had with it was the bow. The pattern called for interfacing the bow and even though I used really light interfacing, mine came out really stiff. I kinda like it that way, but on future blouses, I'll skip the interfacing. The other pieces are so classic, I can see this being a very versatile pattern.

Isis - I made that Vintage Vogue hat you are wearing in yout avatar too - and in the same green!

I made mine in a really thin felt and I felt it wasn't stiff enough to hold it's shape so I sprayed it with stiffner and it's now like cardboard (and my bath has a nasty film on now too)! What is yours made from? It looks quite soft, does it still hold it's shape well?

Mine is made in wool felt that I felt was a bit too thin, so I starched the pattern pieces before sewing it together. It works very well, but I will keep it out of rain... I posted about it in the making vintage hat thread, but I guess it fit in for this thread too:

The dress is satin, the overlay is organza. The bonnet is satin. They're hand embroidered (sheesh!), and there's piping on the bodice, sleeves, pockets, and bonnet brim. The hem is scalloped.

Wonderful creations C-dot! I especially love the first one. I too am making a circle skirt in checks, from a satiny fabric. Did you use a pattern?

Thank you so much! I hope you post pictures of your circle skirt. I used an original pattern published in the 50's, not sure what magazine. I found it here on Elegant Musings. There were some missing bits, but its probably because I'm so new to this that I need everything spelled out for me!

First try at making a skirt. I made this one with the rest of the fabric I used to make the cap I posted pictures of last time. I cut the fabric on the bias, and used vintage buttons. It's inspired by the 30's, even though as usual I had no pattern
