Show us their hats!

Undated photo of the Springfield, Missouri Police Department. Quite a variety of hats ... all but the four must be Detectives. :D Diggin' the Chief's hat.

For shouldering a rifle or swinging a sword? I'm wondering if he influenced the 1960s/70s high-fendered western hats.

Yes, the riflemen of the infantry & cavalry would roll up or otherwise pin up their hat brim on their dominant side. As far as swords go the infantry would have their bayonets & the way the cavalry used swords was to charge at full speed on horseback holding the sword out to the side, hitting their enemy Inflicting blunt force trauma. They actually preferred their blades to have more of a blunt edge & be less sharp so the sword would not stick in soft tissue.

The next time I can think of hats being worn with high fenders were the stockmen & cutters working the tight cattle pins of the stockyards. They didn't have a lot of room to throw ropes, & they rode very small saddles without skirts, fenders' pommels, etc.

The cowboys of west Texas have taken the style & modified it to a shovel nose with 90 degree high fenders.
