Davis "Dave" Tutt (1839 - 1865)

IMG_8649.jpg

Killed on the town square by James Butler Hickok.

Tutt family descendants claim the gunfight was not over a gambling debt/pocket watch, or even over Hickok's girlfriend Susanna Moore, but rather over his involvement with Tutt's younger sister Lottie Tutt.

Unmarked for many yrs the family claims the grave marked today is actually the grave of Tutt's uncle of the same name. The younger Davis Tutt lies nearby still unmarked. Cemetery records do not settle the claim.

Among the best to ever play the part of Hickok was Jeff Bridges.

The flu pandemic of 1918?
Infected a third of the world's population and killed an estimated 50 million people.
With no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza infections, control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, and limitations of public gatherings, which were applied unevenly.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Jeremiah Daniel "JD" Hylton (1838 - 1915)

IMG_8652.jpg

Enlisted in the CSA under General Sterling Price in 1861 but soon appeared on Quantrill's roll call. Hylton was severely wounded at Independence, Aug 1862 & convalesced for 6 months before rejoining Quantrill. Hylton was close to Quantrill & was with him, Frank James, Jim Younger & others in KY when Quantrill was back shot by John Langford under Union Captain Edwin Terrell essentially for the bounty since the war had been over for a month, & died 27 days later.

When I think of Hickok, Cody & others I always think of Hylton in this post War pic. A favorite. Typical of the period, I think.

Documented photo of Henry "Billy the Kid" McCarty, Richard "Dick" Brewer, & Alex McSween taken shortly before the Lincoln County War.

Very cool picture Jack. I never realized how rare and valuable photos of Billy the Kid were. After doing a little searching I found this picture as well. It shows Billy with Richard Brewer, Fred Waite and Henry Brown in 1877. Billy was wanted for murdering a blacksmith at the time this photo was taken. It was the second photograph confirmed to be of Billy.

Tall crowned, no taper wide brimmed hats weren't always the go-to style it seems.
