And on U.S. naval vessels, where servicemen and women are not allowed to engage in any physical contact (a pat on the back, for example) unless needed to get the other person's attention.

Has the pendulum swung too far in the other direction? Is there a "happy medium" somewhere? Can we reach it?

Thank you, Scotrace! I'll try my best to live up to your trust.

The question of this thread -- as least as I'm framing it -- is not whether women were, or are, ever sexually harassed at work. There is no doubt that it did, and does, happen. And I don't doubt that in the past, it occurred more overtly and more frequently. Sexual harassment lawsuits and legislation have played a role in reducing this ugly, manipulative behavior.

The question of this thread, then, is: Do we now label as "sexual harassment" too many of the behaviors that occur between men and women? Are we including some behaviors that, before today, were not considered offensive, let alone threatening?

Caught your discussion, I agree it has gone a little overboard. The school system is getting just as bad ,for example, a first grade boy suspended in Oaklahoma for playing tag and touching the girl he was playing with, to close to the chest while runnning. Crazy world I guess

If you think about it and use your example of you look nice today... If an attractive man said that to Mrs. Sue Happy, she would be flirting back and cackling with the other hens in the house about it (which is how office romances start) but if it is someone she finds repulsive says it, oh my she is being harrassed. Take the compliment from both of them, graciously say thank you and watch old episodes (as opposed to the new ones hahaha) of Andy Griffith and see what it is like to socially interact with people in flattering ways.

I think there's more truth in this than many people care to admit.

In the corporate environment I work in you say absolutely nothing personal to anyone, comment on anything personal, ask anything personal, or offer anything personal, ever.

If you want to talk, you talk about work or the Red Sox; that's about it.

Yes, I think there needs to be a balance, but with lawyers and HR reps at the ready, I doubt we'll ever achieve it.

Or, as I saw last night on "The Office:"
"You complained to HR about me?"
"I was only venting."
"Yeah, to your HR Rep." :)
