Ray Ban "Shooter" glasses...am I nuts?

I spend a lot of time in the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing and just kicking around and I need a pair of glasses that fits the bill. I have a nice pair of Shuron frames that are light and easy to wear but they are so delicate that I am always having to go in and get them tuned up. I am thinking of tracking down a vintage (60's-70's) Ray-Ban "Shooters" and replacing the tinted lenses with clear lenses that match my prescription. I have always liked the late 60's early 70's look of the shooters and I am pretty sure that they would solve most of my issue with optics while afield. Am I nuts?

No not at all, currently there are some ray bans being offered on eBay, not too highly priced as of what I was just looking at a day or so ago, you may just find exactly what you are looking for!

Shooters, if I remember correctly, are aviator style frames which means they have rather large lenses which means that if your rx is a strong one you might have some relatively thick, heavy glasses.

I believe the lense on the large aviator (62mm) is the same as on the large shooter. Aesthetics aside, I believe the only real difference between the two styles is that the lenses are positioned higher and closer together on the shooters to facilitate lense coverage when looking down the barrel of a rifle or shotgun (hence the name shooter).

I wear Ray Ban Shooters almost everyday as my preferred sunglasses. I say, "Go for it!" If the clear prescription lenses don't work out, you can always pop the tinted lenses back in. I got my vintage pair on eBay for a lot less than what they're charging for brand new ones. Keep looking, and you're bound to find a great deal!
