How come your face becomes public property, the moment you start growing a beard or moustache?

The only comments I've ever received pertained to the actual growing of the moss. (I face north a lot.)

But, if you want your face to become a private citizen again, shave it off. I started growing a goatee January 1, 2000. A few months ago, I shaved off the beard part. . . . No one noticed. EVER!

It's happened to me before, too. In my early twenties, I grew a beard to break up the monotony of my face. After a couple years of furiously scratching at an itchy neck and cheeks, I shaved everything but the upper lip. The only comment I got was a question from a close ladyfriend I'd known since before I'd even grown the facial hair. Her query came with a sideways glance and a look of 100 proof perplexity; "Did you grow a moustache?" This gem came a week after I'd shaved, so I nearly fell over laughing!

And, just slightly off topic, after a haircut. Invariably, someone will ask, "Did you get a haircut?" To which I'll give one of a few standard responses: "No, I got them all cut." or "You can tell which one?" or even, "Nope."

I have often wondered about, how women would take it, if their friends, lovers and husbands suddenly began commenting and ordering them to change their looks.
- Stop dying your hair, it looks stupid!
- Why don't you use another lipstick, I am tired of that color.
- Stop using so much makeup.Makes you look older.
- Use more makeup! You do look old.
- Do you have to wear those earrings?
- Get a haircut.
- Grow your hair longer....whatever.

Yep, I know..... "It's only good sound advice, and it all depends on how you say it!" I don't think so! It's interferring in another persons life!;)

If those comments were based on honest opinions I would consider them, but I wouldn't neccesarily follow them. I do appreciate advice about my appearance, whether it is do point out something negative or state a preference about my look.

As someone whos father and brother change their facial hair as fast as it will grow...

you grow it, you open your self up for jokes.

It's natural. I give both of them a hard time about it, especially when I don't like what they're doing.

My father has had a mustache forever, literally, I have never seen him with out one, and would hate to have see it! *shudder* we have pics from my parents second date and he has the same mustache.

Currently he has the mustache and a beard (thank goodness he didn't keep the FULL beard, that was terrible) that goes down into a point. It's odd and we still tease him about it, but no more than he teases me about my jewelry or tea collection or Flip Flop fetish.

My dad usually just grabs me in a bear hug and rubs his beard in my face when I tease him [huh]

Everyone will give you a hard time about things you do, It's human nature.

oh, and I DO get orders about my appearance often, I usually laugh it off or do whatever it is they dont like more drastically (ie: My cateyes in blue eyeshadow)

I do not see myself as touchy but just to give you all a few examples:

- "Planning to join the policeforce/army/airforce?"
- "Got a cold?"
- "Hey, what's that under your nose?"
- "Are we going to Stuttgart with that?"
- "That was smart in the 60's!"
- "Trying to look younger?"
- "You look at lot older!!!"

But also:

- "Cool"
- "It suits you"
- "Wish I could do that - but my wife wont let me..."

[huh]

How about, cool, too bad I can't grow a decent moustache :(

People are just like that

Whether it is a moustache, weight, height, hair color there are those who just can not tolerate the other without a remark.

If it is too much just simply gently bite the hand that is grabbing your face - it's your sovereign right of self-defence it be a fun to see those surprised faces.

I bet you will have a few laughs.;)

I think the mustache pic looks slightly more distinguished (I suppose the converse is that without it you look more approachable?) but both pics are handsome, you can't go wrong. :)

I do hear bits from my significant other about "nooo, don't cut your hair, you know I like it long" and stuff about makeup occasionally but it's never like it's an order... occasionally it's a strongly worded recommendation. I don't take it as insulting.

He also asks me what I think of his facial hair, I told him it was his face and to do what he wanted but I did mention that I liked the goatee and thought he should keep it unless he was tired of it. I sort of rank that with mentioning in passing what cologne I like: it's not telling him what to do, it's pointing out there's possible positive reinforcement! lol

I have had all types of facial hair. From a short beard to a plain mustache, to clean shaven, odd shaped goatees, soulpatches etc. No one ever said anything to me about it unless I asked.

I found it it didn't really matter what type of growth I had, the opinions were usually split 50/50.

I had a goatee for about nine years. When I first started growing it, very few people around here sported one, but eventually it seemed like nearly every guy I saw had one, so I got rid of mine. Some people noticed, but a surprising amount didn't seem to notice at all. Granted, my hair is blond so it was a bit harder to see. ;)
