Actually Mario - I assume the lovely cranberry ribbon is an illusion created by the flash. I expect it to be black - but I'll be happy if I'm wrong.

I don't think so. The change of hue in the ribbon wouldn't be so dramatic just from the flash. Not if it is really black. It may not be as bright as it appears to be in the photo, but I'm pretty sure that it's not black. Let me know if I'm wrong.

You picked it Mario! I just received this from the seller:

"The hat band is not black but is the cranberry that you see (dumbed down a little). This hat was gotten at an estate sale here in San Antonio Tx and here we have a lot of hispanics (Mexicans). This hat belonged to an older man prob in late 50s early 60s and it was called for this fedora the vato look. Actually vato mean man but when used it always refers to a Mexican man (who was probably too old to still be in a gang). It was a cool look for them and others who copied it. This is really a classy hat and was well taken care of."

Can I be an Aussie vato?

Just won this 6 7/8 Mallory Ten in dark gray/charcoal with maroon colored ribbon and nice wide edge binding (I'm still on the roll) in matching color. Seems to be in absolutely immaculate condition without any stains or moth nibbles. At $129, this is by far the most expensive vintage hat I bought off the 'Bay. Quite substantial sum considering that it's a 6 7/8, but I somehow figured that the price would go pretty high on this one. I mean, just look at it! Brim is 2 3/4", crown rises 4 1/2" (creased). Original Mallory box is also included.

Now we're talkin'! :) Congrats, Mario -- that is an absolutely mint condition vintage Mallory -- just as if you had traveled back in time and bought it new right off the shelf! Fantastic -- enjoy! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Cheers,
JtL

I'll be sure to post them Sue.

By the way, I took a pic or two of the Shudde Bros OR as I was leaving for work this morning. I'll post them in the What Hat Are Your Wearing Today thread later.

AND ...I just picked up the Dobbs Gay Blade and Pedigree fedoras from my hat guy. So pics coming up of those too.

Borsalino

I MUST stop with the Borsalinos! But I couldn't resist this one.

It occurs to me that I failed to ask the seller if it was an American or a punti size 7. Oh, well. One of you gentlemen with more generously-sized heads than mine is sure to give it a home if it's the latter.

Love those Boraslinos Sue. I'm guessing it came from an American retailer (?) and is probably Uncle Sam's sizing.

Mr. Tutt, a remarkable find indeed - congratulations! Yes, the ribbon color has to be cranberry or close, and...I like it a lot! Very classy and distinctive at once. And what a score at this price. Amazing.

I'm coming to appreciate the virtues of the often-bypassed homburg. There's some remarkably good ones out there that are getting ignored by those who can only see fedoras on their heads.

Thanks Bill. Yes it was good value indeed. I went to bed last night having made a very modest bid and expected (as is usually the case) to have lost it overnight. It seems this Tex/Mex Homburg wanted to become an Aussie.

The Homburg will be an experiment for me. The cranberry (or maroon as we call it here) gives it an extra bit of panache - and maroon is my state's sporting colour too! We'll see how it sits on my scone when it gets here.

I agree. I think if this were Punti, we'd be talking a U.S. 7-5/8, which would be somewhat uncommonly large. For the era. So I think you have a keeper.

OK Sue, level with us men. My impression is that most women are somewhat less restrictive with respect to size. My 5'2" Carole can often wear my hats if the wind isn't too strong. This past weekend, I had the honor to play flute with a notable fiddle playing woman, and it was cold...and she asked if she could borrow my hat...and her head was far smaller than my 7-1/2 bean, smaller than Carole's, but she did. And it looked good on her. So fill us in please - does the amplitude of the hair contribute, or what?

Sorry, I know this is off-topic. But you look so good in men's hats!

It turned out that the size on this lovely Dobbs 15 was wrongly described as 7 1/4 when in fact it is closer to a 6 7/8. The seller was very helpful and agreed to cancel the sale.

So...keep a look out for it you of more petite dimensions! I'm sure it will be back in the Bay soon.

That sort of thing happens. I now like to see something quite definitive about size before I jump. I did buy a Knox boater a while back - and you know how finicky stiff hats are about size - from a rather young girl whose mother encouraged her to sell off the attic's contents on eBay. She really couldn't see how it made much difference - 7-1/4 or 7-1/2 - should be like a quarter of an inch? I mean, it's seven and something, so it should fit. She was nice so I kept it. It will go back on the bay one of these days.
